AMES, Iowa -- The Horned Frogs kicked off the first day of the Big 12 Outdoor Championships by scoring in all three events they competed in at the Cyclone Sports Complex on Friday.
Sophomore Paola Miranda came into the day ranked fifth in the conference in the women's hammer throw and she replicated that with a fifth-place finish in the first event of the day. After a shaky start, she hit a mark of 56.76m (186-2) on her fourth attempt and improved with her next throw at 57.74m (189-5) to wrap up the top five finish. The distance scored four points for the TCU women's team.
"Paola was fifth, so that got us off to a good start to the day," TCU director of track and field Darryl Anderson said. "That's where she was coming into today, so she would've had to have a seasonal best to move up, but we were pleased with how she competed."
Senior Aaron Tombleson posted a seventh-place mark in the men's hammer throw. His fifth toss of the day was his best, coming in at 54.33m (178-3), tallying two points for the men's squad. He came into the day ranked seventh in the league in the event.
"On the men's side, Aaron Tombleson got us a couple points in the seventh, so that was good," Anderson added.
In the women's javelin, junior Makena Schroder also recorded a seventh-place finish. Her third toss of the afternoon was her best of the day, landing at a distance of 42.97m (141-0). It was her second-best mark set this season, as she came into the day ranked 10th in the conference in the event. Her finish scored two points for the women's team.
"Makena got seventh today," Anderson said. "It's been a struggle all year with her back issues, so it was good to see her come in, compete well and pick up a few points.
"We'll move on to the preliminary stuff tomorrow, as well as a couple finals, with the long jump being the big one for us and we'll go from there."
Day two of the Big 12 Outdoor Championships begins with the men's long jump at 2 p.m. and running events beginning at 3 on Saturday, May 16, in Ames, Iowa.
