On the mound, Alex Young (7-2) turned in his sixth quality start of the season, tossing 6 1/3 innings. He allowed just two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out eight. The duo of Travis Evans and Preston Guillory retired the final eight batters of the game. Evans fanned three of the four batters he faced, while Guillory struck out two of the four he faced.
After a slow start to the game that saw no score through 3 ½ innings, the Horned Frogs came to life in the fourth. TCU sent 10 men to the plate and scored five times to break the game open.
Three walks around a fly out had the bases full of Horned Frogs. Nolan Brown hit a deep fly ball that was dropped in right center to drive in the first run of the game. Steinhagen followed with a two-run single up the middle to push the lead to three. After a base hit from Garrett Crain loaded the bases, Keaton Jones dumped a single into right for a 4-0 lead. Cody Jones capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right.
After facing just one batter over the minimum through five, Young ran into a bit of a jam in the sixth after a walk and base hit had two on with nobody out. The lefty settled down and retired the next three batters to keep the Broncos scoreless.
The TCU offense responded with another crooked number, scoring three runs on four hits to extend the lead to eight. Crain led off the inning with a hit and scored on Cody Jones' third home run of the season. The two-run blast easily cleared the fence in right field for a 7-0 lead. Jeremie Fagnan followed with a double and scored on a Connor Wanhanen base hit.
A one-out, two-run home run from Ryan Budnick broke TCU's string of 34 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run dating back to Sunday's game at Kansas State. Heading into the bottom of the seventh, TCU held a comfortable 8-2 lead.
The Frogs got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Elliott Barzilli collected his third hit of the afternoon to lead off the frame. He moved to third on a Brown base hit and scored on a groundout off the bat of Steinhagen to account for the final score.
With the victory, TCU improves to 30-8 overall. The Horned Frogs will continue their seven-game homestand Tuesday night when they host Incarnate Word at 6:30.
