Brian Howard made his third start of the season and turned in five shutout innings in improving to 4-0 on the season. He allowed just three base runners on two hits and a hit batter while striking out a career-high seven batters.
TCU put together a two-out rally in the first to take the early lead. Connor Wanhanen got things started with a two-out single and moved to third on an Evan Skoug double. Elliott Barzilli struck out, but the ball bounded away from the catcher, allowing Wanhanen to score the first run of the game.
The Horned Frogs needed more two-out magic in the third to extend their lead. Wanhanen singled and Skoug walked to open up the inning. The duo was in scoring position with two outs when Keaton Jones lined a single into right field. Both runners scored and TCU had a 3-0 lead.
Another two runs crossed the plate in the fifth as the lead grew to 5-0. Nolan Brown singled with one out and stole second. Keaton Jones lined a base hit back up the middle to drive in Brown. He took second on the throw to the plate and scored easily on Zack Plunkett's third hit of the night.
Drew Gooch took over on the mound in the sixth and found himself in a one-out jam after a ball got lost in the lights and fell in for a one-out triple. The freshman got a pop-up and a strikeout to end the inning.
Incarnate Word picked up its lone run of the game in the seventh after loading the bases on two hits and a walk with one out. Preston Guillory came on and retired the final two batters of the inning, allowing just one runner to score on a ground out to first. He stayed in the game to earn his first career save with a career-high 2 2/3 scoreless innings pitched.
TCU tacked on its final run of the game in the eighth. Cody Jones led off the inning with a double. With one out, Jones was standing on third when Wanhanen hit a hard chopper at short. The infield was playing in and the throw home to cut down the run was too late to get the speedy Jones and the Frogs had a 6-1 lead.
With the victory, TCU improves to 31-8 overall. The Frogs return to conference play Friday night when they host Texas for a three-game series. All three games will be televised on FSSW or FSSW+.
