Young improved to 5-1 this season with an impressive pitching performance. He retired the first 16 batters he faced and 21 of 23 overall in his seven innings of work. The junior allowed just two base hits and tied his career high with nine strikeouts.
TCU struck first with a run in the second inning. Evan Skoug led off the frame with a double and scored on a Nolan Brown base knock to give the Frogs a 1-0 lead.
The Frogs rode that lead through the middle innings, relying on Young's pitching to hold the Shockers at bay. Wichita State's first base runner of the day came on a one-out double off the bat of Bob Arens. Young left him on second as he got a pair of groundouts to preserve the 1-0 TCU lead.
A three-run sixth inning gave TCU breathing room as it extended its lead to 4-0. Connor Wanhanen kicked things off with a one-out single and moved to second on an infield single from Garrett Crain. Skoug's second double of the game cleared the bases and pushed the lead to 3-0. A wild pitch moved him to third and he raced home on a passed ball, sliding in just ahead of the tag to make it 4-0.
TCU broke the game open with a seven-run seventh. The first seven batters of the inning reached base. Jeremie Fagnan got the frame started with a base hit. Cody Jones followed with a hit to put runners on the corners. After a wild pitch, Wanhanen singled through the right side to drive in two more. Three straight walks, including a bases-loaded free pass to Dane Steinhagen made it a 7-0 game. Brown and Keaton Jones each collected an RBI for a 9-0 lead and Fagnan's second hit of the inning capped the scoring as it drove in two.
In the eighth, the Shockers loaded the bases on two hits and a walk with nobody out. Brian Howard got a strikeout for the first out of the inning but Tanner Dearman picked up a pinch-hit single to drive in Wichita State's only two runs of the game. Howard bounced back to strike out the final two batters of the inning.
Ryan Burnett allowed a lead-off walk, but got a strikeout and an inning-ending double play to lock up the sweep for the Frogs.
With the victory, TCU improves to 21-4 overall. The Frogs will take to the road as eight of their next nine contests will be away from home. First up is a Tuesday night affair at crosstown rival, UT Arlington. Game time at Clay Gould Ballpark is 6:30 p.m.
