FORT WORTH - Pitching, defense and timely hitting guided No. 1 TCU to a 3-1 victory over Baylor in the Big 12 opener Friday night. Cody Jones highlighted the Horned Frog offense with a 4-for-4 day at the plate.

Mitchell Traver (3-0) turned in another solid performance in making his second Friday start on the mound. He gave up a run on four hits, walked a batter and struck out six in seven innings of work. Trey Teakell worked around a one-out walk with a pair of strikeouts in the eighth while Riley Ferrell retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up his sixth save of the season.

Baylor had just six base runners in the game and the only run produced came on a two-out home run from Aaron Dodson in the seventh inning. Other than that, the Bears had just one runner in scoring position.

TCU got all the offense it would need in the third when it scored two runs on three hits and a walk. Jeremie Fagnan led off the frame with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. A Dane Steinhagen base hit put runners on the corners. Fagnan scored easily on a Cody Jones infield single. A bunt single from Connor Wanhanen loaded the bases. Derek Odell ground into a double play, but Steinhagen was able to score for a 2-0 lead.

Traver worked out of his only jam in the fifth inning after a lead-off single and one-out walk had two runners on. A hot smash up the middle off the bat of Justin Arrington was snared by Traver and turned into an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play.

The Horned Frogs picked up a big insurance run in the sixth inning to push the lead to three. Evan Skoug lined a base hit up the middle to open the inning and was standing on second with two outs. A Keaton Jones two-out base hit allowed Skoug to score easily for a 3-0 lead.

TCU improves to 12-2 on the season and 1-0 in Big 12 play. The Frogs and the Bears will square off in game two on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Preston Morrison will toe the rubber for TCU and face Baylor's Daniel Castano. The game will be televised on FSSW+.
