FORT WORTH -- TCU's dominating start to the 2015-16 campaign continued with another strong performance in a first place finish over Memphis and Nebraska. The Horned Frogs fired a 4,708 team score, the second-best mark in program history.
TCU had not reached the 4,700 plateau since firing a 4,718 at Kentucky on Nov. 17, 2012. It's the third time this season the Frogs have fired a top-10 aggregate score and air rifle mark. The 4,708 fired on Sunday matches the second-best mark set at Ohio State on Nov. 10, 2012. It also marks the ninth time in program history the team surpassed 4,700.
"Shooting a team score above 4700 is a challenge," remarked head coach Karen Monez. "To get the big team scores, you need all five counters performing on that day. They had that mental toughness today to achieve a goal they have been working hard to reach since the start of the season. Goal set, goal met."
Nebraska finished second with an aggregate score of 4,671 followed by Memphis with a 4,654.
To reach the mark, the Horned Frogs turned in solid performances in both smallbore and air rifle. They shot a 2,372 in air rifle, a mark that ties the second-highest score in program history. TCU also turned in the fourth-best smallbore score, shooting a 2,336.
All four counters in air rifle fired a 592 or better. TCU needed a strong performance to stave off a solid effort from Nebraska as the Cornhuskers shot a 2,365. TCU was paced by Nichole Hankey's 594, a mark that tied her personal best as well as tied for the match lead. Finishing in the top five were Hannah Black and Sally Li who both shot a 593. Rounding out the Frog shooters was Mindy Miles with a 592.
TCU used a solid smallbore effort to distance itself from the pack. A career-high 589 from Miles paced all shooters. Black tied for second after shooting a 583, followed by Hankey and Li who each fired a 582. Not factoring in the aggregate score, but turning in a career-high 581 was Barrett Ray.
"Goals were also set and met today in smallbore," said Monez. "With seven of the team members at 581 and above, it was a big day for the smallbore team. They gave it 110%. It was an impressive performance from the team."
For the fourth time this season, Miles paced the squad in aggregate score. She established a personal best 1,181 aggregate score, topping her old mark of 1,178 set in the first match of the season. Hankey also set a personal best after shooting an aggregate score of 1,176. Rachel Garner continues her strong start to the season, firing an aggregate score of 1,167 for the third straight match.
TCU will close out the fall schedule with three straight road matches beginning Saturday at Air Force. The Falcons were ranked sixth in the last CRCA poll released on Oct. 19.
