FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's swimming and diving team improved to 7-3 this season with a victory over North Texas, 168-130, on Friday night at the University Rec Center Natatorium.
"I was very proud of the way we competed tonight against North Texas," head coach Richard Sybesma said. "To win on senior night is a special thing and I'm glad we were able to do that for our kids tonight."
After honoring the 17 seniors on this year's squad, the Horned Frogs women's team opened up the night with a win in the 200 medley relay, clocking in at 1:45.72. The team of Ashley Alspaugh, Devin Newton, Emily Gibson and Julia Grace Sanders brought home the victory for TCU.
Junior Carley Stevens recorded the team's fastest time in the 1000 free this season with her first-place time of 10:23.24. It was her first win of the season, but would not be her only win of the night.
Stevens would also tally a first-place mark in the 500 free at 5:07.53 for her first win of the season in the event.
In the 100 back, senior Ashley Alspaugh posted her first win of the season with a time of 57.60.
TCU picked up the top three times in the 200 fly event. Senior Ali Bleasdell claimed the victory at 2:04.57, her third win of the season in the event. Juniors Catherine Rash and Maggie Burkhardt followed quickly behind at 2:06.14 and 2:06.56, respectively.
For the fifth time this season, sophomore Julia-Grace Sanders won the 50 free. She paced to a mark of 23.83, while freshman Emily Gibson finished second at 24.21. Sanders holds the team's top four times in the 50 free this season.
Gibson finished first in the 100 fly with a time of 56.29 for her fifth win of the season in the event. She holds five of the top six marks recorded in the 100 fly this year.
The 400 free relay squad of Sanders, Schuler, E. Gibson and Bleasdell recorded the victory in a close race by a time of 3:30.67. It's the third win this season for the Horned Frog relay squad
In the 3-meter dive, junior Kristen Connolly picked up the win with a score of 258.15. She holds the top three scores by a Horned Frog in the event this season.
Senior Courtney Cheek posted the top mark for the Horned Frogs in the 1-meter dive. Her score of 260.99 earned her second-place and was a season-high score.
Next up for the Horned Frogs is a battle with the Texas Longhorns on Friday, Feb. 6, in Austin at 6 p.m.
