TCU head coach Gary Patterson
Opening Statement:
"It was a good win. That's what the goal was for us, period. We had too many penalties. Offensively, we can't turn the ball over. We have a week to get better and now we get started on Minnesota. We need to keep going faster with the offense. We need to get the ball to the official and get it out quicker. I told them before the game that all I care about is a win. Start the new season; last year is gone. We just need to go about our business and get better."
On when it was decided to start Trevone Boykin:
"Not until after the scrimmages. They were really close in practices. In the scrimmage against the number one defense, (Boykin) was 31-of-40 with three or four touchdowns. I still have a lot of confidence in Matt Joeckel."
On the team's performance:
"Our operation needs to keep getting better. The great part about it is we didn't play our best football tonight. I told y'all about Kolby Listenbee, he's fast. We have other guys that can catch the football. We just need to keep moving forward. The number one thing I was not happy about was the quarterback scrambling. He had 64 yards rushing. We have a lot of quarterbacks in our league that can run and we need to be able to control people and do a better job of tackling. Our safeties and corners did a better job of tackling than our defensive line and linebackers."
TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin
On Speed of Game:
"Coach Cumbie told me told me to go in there and play my game. It was fast and some of the stuff we did related to my game in high school. It is a much bigger and faster game now, you just have to go out there and respect everybody."
On going back to Kolby Listenbee for Touchdown:
"We do this all the time, you got to have a short term memory. I know he's going make those catches when the ball hits his hands. I really don't think twice about going back to him. Overall, he had a pretty good game. It's probably going to be like that every week, he's one of the fastest guys in the Big 12, so after this week he will get the respect he deserves."
Adjustments for Minnesota:
"We did not meet our goal on our third down conversions and had too many turnovers, but that's on all of us out there. We just have to go out there and start preparing tomorrow."
TCU receiver Kolby Listenbee
On the new Offense:
"I feel like with the new offense and the new coaches, we have a swagger about us now. Everybody is having fun and nobody is uptight about it. It's natural, we make routine plays going out there and we're having fun."
On his practice and confidence:
"It's technique. Everyday in practice we work on our goal line fades, so I will try to work on my craft to beat people with a slant or go route. I have to make sure that I hold a complete package and open up for a big change. Most of the stuff before was just confidence. Now I have confidence from track, Coach Patterson and repetition. I feel like now it's just me working on the little things and being more focused on the ball. So now I have the confidence to make anything happen."
On his teammates:
"Myself, Ty [Slanina], Josh [Doctson]and [David] Porter are all really close, so we go out there and support each other to do a good job. It's almost like street ball. It feels like you are just out there playing with your friends. It gives us a greater confidence in each other. If anything bad happens we know each other's abilities to go out there, play ball and encourage each other to do better."
TCU senior linebacker Marcus Mallet
On veteran team:
"That all comes down to practice, knowing what habits and tendencies your guys on your first team and second team know what they're going to do. Maybe we have a call and we just know that one of the D-line is going to play that call a certain way and that makes our offense better. We do things off the field that makes our bond on the field even better."
TCU junior defensive end Mike Tuaua
On what he's looking forward to the rest of the year:
"I'm just going to look at the next game we have, Minnesota. I'm not really worried about any other team right now; just have to focus on one team at a time. When you get too focused on other teams, you're going to lose who your opponent is in front of you. Right now my main goal is to get that `w' against Minnesota."
Samford acting head coach/defensive coordinator Bill D'Ottavio
On TCU's style of play:
"They had a lot of speed outside, and that's one of the things that makes them dangerous. They don't just have one speed back, they have speed with all their receivers. They have a lot of good football players and they executed well tonight, so give them credit."
On how Samford competed in the contest:
"I think we made way too many errors, obviously. I think that was clearly evident. I think we could have played a little sharper in a lot of areas. We have things we have to work on and get better. It challenges you in a lot of ways. We played a lot of young kids, which was good to get them some experience moving forward. We are going to keep working hard."
On how he would compare TCU to the 2013 Arkansas team that Samford faced:
"I think we would talk about different styles for one. It starts right there. This team stretches it a little more with the up-tempo, and they get a lot more snaps. It was just a different style of football and [especially] for this early in the year with this being our first game."
Samford wide receiver Jaquiski Tartt
On TCU's game plan against Samford:
"The tempo was there. It would change in different series, but a lot of the game we made some mental mistakes on our part. Don't get me wrong, they did a great job at calling their plays and running their offense."
On how TCU compared to Arkansas, whom Samford lost a close game to in 2013:
"I feel like they are the same. At the end of the day, we just have to play our game. We feel like we didn't do that today."
