EXAMS APPROACHING
As hard as it is to believe, today is our last day of classes for the semester. We wish all our students the very best on a strong finish as they prepare for final exams next week.
BIG 12 CHAMPIONS!
Congratulations to men's golf student-athlete Julien Brun on his Big 12 Championship last weekend at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas. Julien truly blitzed the field. His 9-stroke win, keyed by back-to-back rounds of 66, tied for the third-largest margin of victory in Big 12 Championship history. In the process, Julien extended his TCU career record to eight tournament victories. We also picked up a Big 12 championship in women's tennis with Simona Parajova capturing the conference crown at No. 2 singles.
POSTSEASON BOUND
Our women's golf program will be represented in the postseason for a 19th-consecutive year with Sanna Nuutinen's selection to the NCAA Central Regional. She'll begin play May 8 in Stillwater, Okla.
TICKET UPDATE
With last Friday's deadline having passed, we very much thank everyone who renewed their football season tickets. We're in the home stretch of a third consecutive sellout of season tickets. If you made an upgrade request or were on our waiting list, we'll be in touch soon with the next steps in this process.
STAT OF THE DAY
Our baseball program ranks No. 1 nationally for private schools with its average of 3,284 fans per home date.
ON THE DOCKET
We have our first Big 12 home baseball series in nearly a month when our 13th-ranked Horned Frogs host Kansas State this weekend. First pitch is 6:30 p.m. for Friday's series opener, 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Track and field will also be in action. We head to Austin for the Texas Invitational, our final meet before the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in two weeks in Lubbock.
#LIVEATLUPTON
Our goal for Friday's home baseball game is to Pack the Park! Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle is issuing a challenge for students and fans to fill the stands Friday night as part of Be #LiveAtLupton! We'll also be having a Lone Star Friday Tailgate for students. On Saturday, be on the lookout for a spring cleaning of our leftover giveaway items. It is also the Frogs For The Cure game. All fans wearing pink Saturday can receive a $6 ticket at the box office upon arrival at the stadium. Sunday is our regular Kids' Day. Inflatables, face painters and games for kids will be available starting at noon. It will also be $1 Hot Dog Day at the park.
BIG 12 CORNER
The Big 12 is the only conference in the nation with all its baseball teams ranked in the top 100 of the NCAA RPI.
MEET THE STAFF
Abby Norman is wrapping up her first year as one of our assistant directors of media relations. The Indianapolis native works directly with our volleyball and men's and women's tennis programs. Abby was phenomenal last weekend in serving as the media coordinator when we hosted the Big 12 Men's and Women's Tennis Championships. A graduate of West Virginia University, Abby was a standout student-athlete during her days as a member of the Mountaineers' volleyball team. She was then hired as a graduate assistant in the WVU media relations office before arriving at TCU last July.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
I'm sure many of you remember Matt Vern as a four-year letterman (2006-09) for our baseball program. In his senior year, Matt helped lead us to our first NCAA Super Regional appearance. We also hosted our first Regional that season. Matt led us in batting average, home runs, RBI and stolen bases in 2009. He left TCU among the career leaders in many statistical categories. A draft pick of the San Diego Padres, Matt is currently a mortgage loan officer for SSB&T Mortgage Group and lives in Fort Worth with his new bride and TCU graduate Julie Hawkins. The two were married in November 2013.
NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE
Last Week's Answer: Can't Buy Me Love was one of my favorite movies in the 1980s. It featured a young Patrick Dempsey as Ronald Miller and included the memorable line from his younger brother Chuckie, "You took him from geek status to king status to no status."
This Week's Quote: "I ain't gonna have no money to buy my son the G.I. Joe with the kung-fu grip!"
COMPLIANCE CORNER
The baseball coaches at Ocean State University (OSU) require their student-athletes to help prepare the field for practices by removing the tarps and lining the infield. This prep work takes one hour to complete. Since the coaches require the student-athletes to perform these jobs, are they considered Countable Athletically Related Activities (CARA)? No. NCAA Official Interpretation - 12/21/11 - Student-Athlete Performing Required Field or Facility Preparation or Maintenance (I) - states that field or facility preparation or maintenance that is performed by a student-athlete, related to practice or competition and required, supervised or monitored by a coaching staff member is not a countable athletically related activity.
