FORT WORTH, Texas - In front of over 1,000 fans, the No. 48 TCU men's tennis team lost a close battle with No. 5 Texas 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (6-2) started out the nonconference showdown strong by taking the doubles point, but the Longhorns (11-2) rebounded and picked up four singles wins to take the match.
"We played great doubles today," coach David Roditi said. "We made a good run at them and we were on our way to a victory, but they are well coached and showed why they are the No. 5 team in the nation. Our character will be tested tomorrow playing a very good Tulsa team."
TCU started the match off with a bang by dominating in the doubles competition and quickly taking the point. The Frogs got their first win in doubles on court three, as Hudson Blake and Facundo Lugones claimed an 8-3 win over Nick Naumann and George Goldhoff. The duo are undefeated on the season with a record of 4-0 since pairing up only a week ago.
No. 18 Nick Chappell and Will Stein completed the doubles point for TCU as the pair upset the No. 8 ranked team of Søren Hess-Olesen and Lloyd Glasspool 8-5 on court one. This is the third ranked opponent the duo has beaten for the season and the second team ranked in the top 10.
The Longhorns brought on the pressure as Adrien Berkowicz and Naumann quickly picked up singles wins on courts five and six, respectively, to put Texas ahead 2-1 in the match.
TCU responded with Arnau Dachs downing No. 60 George Goldhoff at No. 3 singles with a score of 7-5, 6-3 to even the match at 2-2. The win over the nationally ranked Goldhoff was the first ranked opponent victory for the junior from Vic, Spain, who moves to 8-1 in dual matches.
Texas did not back down anymore, as No. 22 Glasspool came back from being a set down, to defeat No. 51 Chappell 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on court two to put the Longhorns back in the lead at 3-2. David Holiner clinched the win for Texas just moments later when he claimed a three-set 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over Jhonathan Gonzalez on court six.
TCU will continue its home weekend, with another nationally ranked opponent in No. 32 Tulsa at 1 p.m., tomorrow. Admission to the match is free, with free pizza being served between the doubles and singles matches. Live results can be found at GoFrogs.com, with a final recap available at the completion of the competition.
