TCU head coach Gary Patterson
Opening Statement:
"Well I was just proud of the group and the way they bounced back. I told them last week I put too much defense in and confused them and didn't play very well. I told them I wouldn't do that to them again. It's the next ball game. Now we have Texas Tech moving forward."
On being back in the conference title race:
"I'm not even thinking about it. I didn't think about it before. Two weeks ago I had Oklahoma, then I had Baylor, then Oklahoma State and now I have Texas Tech. My advice to anybody would be to try to win the game that you're playing and not to worry about anything else. West Virginia wins and Kansas State wins. You have to hold home base. You have to win at home, it's hard to win on the road because there's a lot of good football teams in this league. We have six games left and all six are capable of playing well."
On who stepped up to make sure there wasn't a letdown from last week:
"I think it's a bunch of guys. They pouted a little bit but the thing is they practiced a lot better. I told them it was my fault. Defensively, I should've put them in a better position to do things. I told them in pregame this morning that wouldn't happen again. Have to get ready to play. I said this at the beginning of the week, in this league, this week and for the rest of the year you have to be able to play the redzone. Everybody can move the football in this league. How you play the redzone and you want them to have to kick field goals and I thought we did. Offensively, we got a couple of breaks, a couple that went for touchdowns but they could've been intercepted. They were on our side. There was kind of a lull in the second quarter like you wanted to get it all over with when they were moving the ball. I think we gained a lot of confidence making them kick a field goal to make it just go to nine.
On keeping Oklahoma State from scoring a touchdown:
"In this league it's hard to do that. Whether its Oklahoma State or anybody, they're just good at what they do. Their outside wideouts are good at what they do and we had to change up coverages. I thought we did a good job of that. I'm sure they were very confident after watching how we played a week ago. We changed up how we played technique on the outside. It helped us a little bit, they weren't necessarily happy with it in the beginning of the week, but especially now you know they're happy with it."
On Trevone Boykin's play:
"You have to give Trevone credit. He throws the one screen that they had a zone blitz on him, but outside of that, he did a great job. The attribute that causes you a lot of problems is that he can get you with his feet. That creates space for other people once he starts running. That's why, through the years, I've been a Trevone fan. I've been defending him in practice for three years. We just have to keep playing."
On Texas Tech:
"We have a high-powered offense next week in Texas Tech. They gave West Virginia all they wanted, leading most of the game. They won today. They have an opportunity to get back. For us, we have to get ready to play. There's no weeks off. I think you find out with this league and with as much parity and as close as the talent level there is, those five plays are a big deal. Getting a touchdown called back, missing a field goal and not calling the right third or fourth down call. All of those things in this league in the next six weeks are going to be really interesting."
TCU junior quarterback Trevone Boykin
On recovering from last week's loss:
"Leaders on our team pick guys up during the week. We knew that taste we had in our mouth after the Baylor game. We made a promise to our team and ourselves that we really don't want that anymore. So we just came out today and played four quarters."
On Oklahoma State:
"Oklahoma State is a good football team. We knew coming in it was going to be a fight and we knew we were going to have to fight for four quarters. We just came out with our hearts. It really motivates us a lot going into next week."
TCU junior wide receiver Josh Doctson
On almost breaking the school's all-time receiving record
"You don't really know what your stats are during the game. I just keep playing my game and do what we need to do to win. It wasn't until after the fourth quarter when I got pulled out that I was told I was close to breaking the record. It would have been pretty cool to break the record, but at the end of the day we got the W, so that's all that matters."
On playing wide receiver:
"My role is to get the jump balls. Trey (Boykin) likes throwing it up like that, even in double coverage. I just try to go up and make a play- it's just using basketball skills translating on the field."
On playing with Boykin:
"It's a team win. Glad we got the win. He trusts all of our receivers. We have playmakers all over the field."
On beating another top-15 opponent:
"Coach P says it the most. Each week it's going to be a ranked team. You have to love it as a player. Being the Big 12, every game there's going to be a nationally-ranked team on the other sideline. It brings a lot of enthusiasm out of everyone."
TCU running back B.J. Catalon
On if the coaches emphasized a certain running attack
"No, they didn't. They really haven't. They just told me to be a leader on this team as a running back in the backfield, and that's my role on the team to help out, score some points, block in the backfield, and catch some passes so we can win."
On the team's resurgence with its fans and the community
"It's been exciting. A lot of people are happy to work with us, and we have the camaraderie. It's exciting to just go out there and study in the classroom that `hey, they're pretty good,' week in and week out you face good opponents, and you get good opportunities. Whenever you do things and make plays, people are watching, and that helps out recruiting and the school and builds the program up."
On the team's ability to start hot and keep the momentum all game
"That's one thing we emphasized: play a full four-quarter game. We have to go out there and make sure we don't start out hot then get cold. We just went into practice this week saying to `finish practice, finish practice, finish practice.' It's going to translate into the game. In the locker room at halftime we said we had two more quarters, let's go finish it and play some football."
TCU cornerback Kevin White
On if it was a team effort to come back from last week's loss at Baylor
"Most definitely. We let our heads down, and guys felt like we dropped the load. We definitely had to bounce back and get a confidence boost. That's what we are used to doing."
On the mental aspect of the defense coming back from its performance in last week's loss
"It was a sound defense. We realized we aren't a perfect secondary, mistakes are going to be made, but we had a conscious effort to do a lot of the little things right and make more plays."
On the motivation factor
"Great teams have to bounce back. You can't let one loss define your season and define your team. We knew one loss wasn't going to define us, and we would just play harder, that's all we could do."
On being behind a rare occurrence of keeping Oklahoma State out of the endzone
"That's what we pride ourselves on doing. The coaches and Coach [Patterson] puts us in position to make plays. This is our goal: make them kick field goals. If you can take away touchdowns, you have a great chance of winning."
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy
Opening statement:
"It wasn't a very good day for us, we didn't make enough plays, coaches coached better than us, players played better. We just got our butts kicked, there's not really anything else I can say. Offensively we couldn't make plays, we ran the ball a little bit better today but we didn't protect. We never could get out of a jam. We played a better football team, they're definitely a better football team no question."
On TCU's performance:
"Without watching the tape they certainty made plays against younger players in the game. They also had a good scheme, that's all a part of the game. They tried to find a mismatch and attack that particular player. There were times that we were in position, we were close but we just never made the play."
On the lopsided loss:
"A couple years ago we were ahead of Baylor like 45 to nothing at half, and they were a good team and I often wondered if that would ever happen to us and they sure quickly answered my question. I think sometimes the other team is better this year. They're better than we are and we just played average and they made big plays and when you're in a game like this you have to make a few big plays to overcome or score in special teams.
On the rest of the season
"I have a good feel for who we are as a football team and the direction we're going so I have to be patient with players. If there is a number of young players out there or inexperienced, its not going to do any good for me to chew on those guys and beat them down. We need to continue to build them up, there's certain areas that we need to improve in just like in the coaching area. We have to work hard and continue to put them in positions for success. I told the team, I can't remember the last time we had a game like this so right now will be a true test of character for us."
