Pereira Continues Hot Streak at Regionals

FORT WORTH, Texas - Freshman Alexis Pereira continued her hot streak at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships by posting two straight wins over ranked opponents on Saturday for a berth in the semifinals of the singles bracket at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
The San Gabriel, Calif., native opened the day with an easy 6-2, 6-2 victory over No. 65 Ines Deheza of Texas A&M in the sweet 16 and had to face fellow teammate and No. 31 Stefanie Tan in the quarterfinal. Pereira took the opening set 6-2, before Tan responded with a 7-5 victory in the second set. Pereira proved to have what was needed to wrap up the match and defeated Tan 6-4 in the final set.
Pereira will have to take on her fourth straight nationally ranked opponent in the semifinal on Sunday, as the newcomer faces No. 68 Despoina Vogasari of Houston at 12:30 p.m.
Tan bowed out of the singles bracket, but remained alive in the doubles bracket with partner Seda Arantekin. The duo started the morning by taking out the No. 8 seeded team of Lynn Kiro and Sarah Dvorak of Texas Tech 8-5 to advance to the semifinal of the bracket. The doubles tandem will have to take on Hristina Dishkova and Holly Verner of SMU tomorrow at 9 a.m., for a chance to play in the finals.
Simona Parajova continued her run in the consolation singles bracket and is into the quarterfinals after a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Shannon Beckett of Texas State. The senior will face Katia Stavroulaki of UTPA at 10:45 a.m., tomorrow.
