
Tan and Pereira Continue to Roll at Regionals

FORT WORTH, Texas - Two doubles tandems, along with two singles players have moved on to the next round at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships that were held Friday in Waco, Texas at the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor.
Senior Stefanie Tan and newcomer Alexis Pereira have stayed alive in both the singles and doubles brackets, as the duo were each able to post three wins on the day to make it into the quarterfinals of the doubles bracket and the sweet 16 of the singles bracket.
Tan teamed up with Seda Arantekin in doubles action, as the duo came off a first round bye to easily take care of Mila Milanovic and Caitlyn Mitchell of Sam Houston State, 8-2. The duo continued to roll and were able to upend Jacobea Junger and Miriam Rosell of UTSA, 8-4, to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. The pair will face the No. 6 seed of Sarah Dvorak and Lynn Kiro of Texas Tech at 9 a.m., on Saturday.
Pereira paired up with fellow newcomer Palina Dubavets to post two straight doubles victories on the day. After escaping a tiebreaker on day one, the duo took out the No. 5 seeded team of Natalie Beazant and Alison Ho of Rice, 8-4, before shutting out Katy Collins and Monica Pieratt of Texas State, 8-0. Next up for the freshmen are the No. 3 seeded team of Kelley Anderson and Blair Shankle from Baylor at 9 a.m., tomorrow.
In singles action, No. 31 Tan easily rolled into the sweet 16 with a straight-set victory over Rutua Bhosale of Texas A&M, 6-2, 6-1. The Singapore native will have to face Anderson of Big 12 foe Baylor in the next round at 10:45 a.m., tomorrow at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Pereira continued her winning into the singles portion of the tournament by defeating her first ranked opponent of her young career, with a dominant 6-2, 6-4 victory over No. 83 Kiro of Texas Tech. She will have to face another ranked opponent in the sweet 16 when the California native takes on No. 65 Ines Deheza of Texas A&M at 10:45 a.m.
After a tough first-round loss in the main draw of singles, senior Simona Parajova has rebounded to win two straight matches in the consolation draw and move into the fourth round. Parajova defeated Serio Aqustina of UT Arlington, 7-6(7), 6-3, before taking out Reegan Greenwood of UTPA, 6-0, 6-0.
Parajova will take on Shannon Beckett of Texas State tomorrow at 1:30 p.m., for a spot in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.
