TCU Posts Nine Wins at Regionals

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's tennis team was able to pick up nine wins on Thursday on the first day of the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships in Waco, Texas at the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor.
Four Horned Frogs were able to move on in the singles bracket, while two doubles tandems were able to snag wins in the opening round of the doubles bracket.
To open the competition, Sofiko Kadzhaya and Simona Parajova were able to take down Anastasiya Shestakova and Alexis Thoma of North Texas 8-5, while Palina Dubavets and Alexia Pereira were victorious over Lisa Bulgakova and Dasha Sharapova of SMU in a tiebreaker, 8-7(5).
The two doubles teams will join the pair of Stefanie Tan and Seda Arantekin in the second round of doubles competition that will begin at 9 a.m., tomorrow in Waco.
In singles action, three players earned byes while Kadzhaya, Dubavets and Arantekin all competed in the opening round. Kadzhaya and Dubavets were able to knock out their opponents in straight sets, while Arantekin made a comeback to defeat Ana Sofia Cordero of North Texas, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
In the round of 64, Dubavets and Arantekin were able to continue their winning ways with straight-set victories. Arantekin was able to defeat Verena Scott of UT Arlington 6-3, 6-2, while Dubavets posted a win over Lindsey Hodge of Rice, 6-4, 6-2.
No. 31 Tan and newcomer Pereira started their singles action after an opening round bye, with Tan taking out Celia Rodriguez, 6-2, 6-3 and Pereira easily took care of Kaysie Hermsdorf of Abilene Christian, 6-3, 6-4.
Singles action for Kadzhaya and No. 88 Parajova ended in the round of 64. Kadzhaya dropped her match to No. 13 Breaunna Addison of Texas, 6-0, 6-4, while Parajova was upset by Stefania Hristov of Texas A&M, 7-6(1), 6-3.
Singles action will continue tomorrow on the campus of Baylor starting at 10:15 a.m., after the conclusion of the round of 32 of doubles action.
