
TCU Falls At West Virginia

FORT WORTH - The TCU women's rifle team suffered its first loss of the season in a 4,712-4,664 decision at No. 1 West Virginia. The Frogs (1-1) were facing a Mountaineer squad shooting in their first match of the season.
Hannah Black's 593 was the best of any TCU shooter in air rifle and was second overall among all shooters. Mindy Miles added a career-high score of 591, topping her previous personal best of 588 which she fired in the first match of the season against Army. Sally Li turned in another solid score as she fired a 590. She surpassed the 590-point plateau for the ninth time in her career.
Three Horned Frogs, Black, Li and Ariana Grabowski, tied for the team-high in smallbore with a 578. Katie Bridges' 577 and Miles' 574 were right behind. For Bridges', the 577 was a career high. She put together a strong prone score, shooting a 200 with 19 center shots. Not factoring into the team score, but shooting a career-high 562 was Barrett Ray.
Black's 1,171 aggregate score was one point shy of her personal-best, which she also set in the season-opening match with Army. Li turned in an aggregate score of 1,168 followed by Miles at 1,165. Bridges posted an aggregate score of 1,159 and Grabowski a 1,156.
West Virginia's Ziva Dvorsak led all air rifle participants with a 597 while Michael Bamsey and Elizabeth Gratz contributed 592s. A 589 in smallbore by Garrett Spurgeon as well as 584s by Thomas Kyanko and Jean-Pierre Lucas helped pave the way for the victory for the Mountaineers.
Miles and Black will have a busy week as they head to Guadalajara, Mexico to take part at the Championship of the Americas competition. They will be a part of 63 USA Shooting Team members that going quota hunting in pursuit of the all-important Olympic quotas available at the competition.
TCU will return to its home range Sunday when Alaska-Fairbanks comes to town.
