NORMAN, Okla. - TCU's men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback Sunday at Oklahoma inside the Sooners' Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion.
The 33rd-ranked Horned Frogs slipped to 16-6 on the year and 1-1 in the Big 12 with the loss, which was just their second in the last 11 matches. No. 11 Oklahoma improved to 1-5 and 2-0 in league play.
"They have a good team and we didn't handle the overall circumstances well," TCU coach David Roditi said. "We will learn from it and be ready for Texas on Saturday. I know we can compete better than we did today."
Oklahoma opened the match with a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. No. 29-ranked Costin Paval and Dane Webb were too much for TCU's sophomore tandem of Nick Chappell and Will Stein, bettering the No. 79 Frog duo, 8-4.
Arnau Dachs and Orlando Superlano were unable to extend their winning streak to seven matches and fell 8-5 to Lawrence Formentera and Nick Papac, at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point for the Sooners.
Axel Alvarez Llamas dropped Facundo Lugones at No. 4 singles to extend OU's lead to 2-0, then Leonard Stakhovsky followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles over Rodolfo Bustamante to bring the Sooners within one point of clinching the match.
Papac scored OU's fourth point at No. 5 singles, getting past TCU's JT Sundling, 6-3, 6-3. The Sooners' top three players, which are each ranked among the nation's top 61 proved worthy of their spots in the rankings with wins at Nos. 1 through 3 singles.
Superlano pushed No. 61 Webb at No. 3 singles and took the first set, but ultimately fell, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6). Alcorta, ranked 51st, was a 6-4, 7-6 (5) winner over No. 119 Dachs before No. 105 Chappell gave 30th-ranked Paval all he could handle at No. 1 singles, but the Sooner was able to claim a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7) win for OU's seventh point.
TCU returns to action April 13 when it hosts Texas at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
