FORT WORTH—The TCU men's golf team treks to the east coast to tee off the 2011 fall season this weekend, as it competes at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, N.Y. The Horned Frogs will play three rounds over two days Sunday and Monday at Turning Stone's Kaluhyat Course.
Following a Saturday practice round, competition begins Sunday with 36 holes of continuous play. The tournament then wraps up Monday with the final round at Turning Stone.
This weekend's competition will mark TCU's first-ever appearance at Turning Stone, a Robert Trent Jones-designed course that measures 7,105 yards with a par of 72. The trip will mark the Frogs' first to the Empire State since at least prior to the 2001-02 season. The squad will make it two consecutive New York stops in two weeks, when it plays in The McLaughlin tournament Sept. 16-17 in Farmington, N.Y.
The field for this weekend's fall opener, hosted by Missouri, will feature 14 teams: Baylor, Binghamton, Bowling Green, Central Connecticut State, Cleveland State, Delaware, Missouri, Mount St. Mary's, Purdue, Seton Hall, St. Bonaventure, St. Peters, TCU, UConn.
TCU's first two tournaments will give the squad a quick preview of some of its future opponents in the BIG EAST Conference, which the Frogs will join prior to the 2012-13 season. Included in this weekend's field are BIG EAST foes Seton Hall and UConn, while St. John's and Villanova will compete at The McLaughlin in two weeks.
TCU willfield a squad mixed with experience and youth this weekend. Back for TCU are senior Johan de Beer, a three-time All-Mountain West Conference selection, as well as juniors Pontus Gad and Daniel Jennevret, both fixtures in the Frog lineup the last two years. Joining the trio of returnees will be freshman Julien Brun, a highly talented newcomer from Antibes, France, and sophomore Ian Phillips, who will be making his first appearance in varsity competition for TCU.
The Frogs enter the season among the "Others Receiving Votes" category in the preseason Golf World/Nike Golf Division I College Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Frogs received 37 votes, which ranked 31st among all NCAA Division I squads, and own the top point total for all squad's competing at this weekend's tournament.
This year's Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate marks the event's third year. Purdue (2010) and Missouri (2009) won the previous two team championships.
Results from this weekend will be posted on Missouri's official athletics web site, MUTigers.com, following the completion of each day's rounds. A full recap of TCU's results will be available on GoFrogs.com.
