Former TCU men's golfer J.J. Killeen, who lettered for the Horned Frogs from 2002 through 2005, earned his first Nationwide Tour event championship Sunday with a four-stroke victory at the Utah Championship in Sandy, Utah.
Killeen, who tied the Willow Creek Country Club record in the opening round with a 9-under par 62, held at least a share of the lead following each of the tournament's four days. A Sunday 65 pushed his score to -22 with a four-round total of 262, four strokes better than runner-up Jeff Gove. The score also matched the Utah Championship 72-hole record first set by Brendon Todd in 2008.
The win earned Killeen a $99,000 paycheck and a boost from 25th place on the Nationwide Tour money list into the No. 5 position. He currently finds himself with an inside track on earning a spot on the PGA Tour in 2012, as each of the top-25 players on the Nationwide Tour's final annual money list receive a promotion for the next season.
During his career at TCU, Killeen helped lead the Frogs to four consecutive Conference USA championships between 2002 and 2005, becoming only the third student-athlete in school history at the time to play on four conference title squads. He earned third-team All-America honors as a senior in 2005, when he also was named C-USA Golfer of the Year.
