
Frogs Compete At USA Shooting National Championships

FORT WORTH, Texas - Five members of the TCU rifle team recently completed competition at the USA Shooting National Championships which were held in Fort Benning, Ga. Sarah Beard was one of the top shooters at the championships, winning two titles.
Sarah Scherer, Sarah Beard and Caitlin Morrissey took part in the two-day women's air rifle event to open the competition. The event consisted of two 40-shot matches, one each day. Scherer led after the first day of competition as she fired a 396, while Beard and Morrissey werer tied with five others after shooting a 394. Their scores were good enough to land them in the top eight final, with Scherer leading the way.
Beard fired a 102.7 in the final to finish second, just 0.2 behind the champion. Scherer shot a 100.1 to come in fourth and Morrissey rounded out the top eight after shooting a 102.9 in the final. Catherine Green fired a two-day score of 774 (391 and 383), while Jaime Dowd shot a two-day score of 746 (371 and 375).
Following the Women's final, the top eight junior competitors then shot another final to determine the National Junior Champion. Scherer was crowned the National Junior Air Rifle Champion after shooting a 102.6 in the final. Beard was the runner-up with her final round of 102.1.
The Frogs' lone representative in the Women's 50-meter prone smallbore event (60 shots fired from the prone position) was Beard. She took home second place with a score of 1,181.
The final event of the championships was the 50 meter 3x20 smallbore event. Beard finished the first day with the top score of 586. She followed with a day two score of 578 to qualify for the final. Scherer's two-day total of 1154 (573 and 581) also qualified her for the final. Beard entered the final three points behind Kentucky's Emily Holsopple. She made up the deficit, firing a final-best 99.9 to win the open women's three position national championship by 0.4 of a point over Holsopple.
Beard solid run at the championship continued a she also claimed the National Junior Three Position Championship title. Again, she entered the final three points behind Holsopple only to come away with the victory. She fired an excellent final of 101.9 to move ahead of Holsopple by 0.3 of a point to win her second national championship title.
