FORT WORTH - TCU's women's tennis team sent its seniors out on the right note Wednesday with a 5-1 thumping of Midwestern State at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs improved to 11-10 and now turn their sights toward next week's Mountain West Conference Championships.
"It was good to win a match and make it a special night for the girls," TCU coach Dave Borelli said. "I'm happy to get back above .500 and now we've got some big matches coming up at the MWC Championships."
TCU rolled to the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 1 doubles. Senior Idunn Hertzberg and Gaby Mastromarino struck first for the Purple and White, scoring an 8-0 win over MSU's Lindsey Holcomb and Ashley Huse.
Seniors Maria Babanova and Katariina Tuohimaa clinched the point for the Frogs with their 8-3 dismissal of Alex Odell-Michels and Rozike van Rensburg. TCU improved to 10-2 this season when winning the doubles point.
Olivia Smith got right to work in singles play, making it 2-0 in favor of the home team with her 6-1, 6-0 triumph over van Rensburg at No. 1 singles. It was the eighth-straight singles win of the season for the Bath, England, native.
Federica Denti followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win of her own over Odell-Michels at No. 2 singles to make the score 3-0. Babanova scored the clinching fourth point for the Frogs at No. 4 singles when she took care of Holcomb, 6-2, 6-4.
Shalini Sahoo picked up the fifth point of the night for TCU with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Robertson at No. 3 singles. She closed the regular season with a 13-6 mark in singles.
TCU is off until April 28 when it begins play at the MWC Championships in Fort Collins, Colo. The Horned Frogs are locked in as the No. 4 seed.
