FORT WORTH - TCU's women's tennis team closed its six-match homestand in style Thursday with a 6-1 triumph over Kentucky at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (3-6) picked up wins in two of the three doubles matches and in five of the six singles matches to score six points.
"I was happy with the way we played today," TCU coach Dave Borelli said. "They are a good program and I'm happy we got the win. We have to keep improving in doubles, but I was happy with our singles play. If we can stay healthy, we aren't a team that someone is going to want to face on down the road."
Kentucky (3-12) struck first in the doubles portion of the match with a win at No. 3 doubles. However, TCU's 52nd-ranked duo of Federica Denti and Katariina Tuohimaa responded with an 8-5 win over Khristina Blajkevitch and Megan Broderick of UK at No 1 doubles. The TCU tandem is 6-3 this spring.
Gaby Mastromarino and Olivia Smith would clinch the doubles point for the Frogs when they grabbed an 8-4 win at the hands of UK's Caitlin McGraw and Marni Venter. TCU's No. 2 doubles squad is 3-6 this spring.
After Stiles scored the lone point for the Wildcats at No. 2 singles, TCU rallied off five straight wins in singles, including four in straight sets.
Senior Tuohimaa got back on track at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 dismantling of No. 112 Megan Broderick. It was the second win of the spring over a ranked opponent for the Helsinki, Finland, native.
Denti made the score 3-1 in favor of the Purple and White with her 6-2, 6-1 win over UK's Blajkevitch at No. 3 singles. The Bellano, Italy, native has won three-straight matches.
TCU's Shalini Sahoo also won her third-straight match in win-clinching fashion with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Misha Testerman. The New Delhi, India, native is 5-4 this spring.
At No. 4 singles, Mastromarino improved to 5-2 this spring with her 6-0, 7-6 (3) win at the expense of UK's McGraw. The Tequesta, Fla., product has won two in a row.
With the match clinched for TCU, the third set of Hertzberg's match at No. 5 singles was played in a super-tiebreaker format. The Oslo, Norway, native downed Witten in the tiebreaker and in the match 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (7).
With the win, the Frogs improved to 3-4 in the confines of the Friedman Tennis Center this season. TCU returns to action March 20 when it travels to Rice for the first of three road matches.
