WAIKOLOA, Hawaii--The TCU men's golf team finished off a strong opening week of the spring season Friday by tying for seventh place in a competitive field at the 21st annual Amer Ari Invitational held at the Waikoloa Kings' Club.
The Horned Frogs, who were in a tie for 12th place following Wednesday's day one action and tied for eight place after Thursday play, combined to card a 5-under par 282 Thursday to earn a tie with Arizona State with a combined week score of -14 (850). TCU's final-round score matched USC for the fourth-best total of the day.
TCU was the lone squad not currently ranked among the nation's top-50 teams to finish among the field's top-9 finishers. The Frogs defeated five ranked opponents overall: No. 9 Stanford, No. 25 Washington, No. 34 Florida State, No. 38 Oregon State and No. 48 Oregon.
Junior Johan de Beer concluded the tournament as the Frogs' top finisher in a tie for 10th place at -7. He shot an even-par 72 Friday following rounds of 69 and 68 earlier in the week and finished above 16 players who entered the week ranked among the nation's top-100 golfers.
Fellow junior Eli Cole tied for 17th place at -5 for the tournament after shooting a 2-under par 70 on Friday. He recorded scores of 73 and 68 to open the week. Senior Tom Hoge tied for 38th place at -1, while sophomore Pontus Gad tied for 41st at even par for the week. Hoge and Gad shot 67 and 73, respective on Friday. Hoge's score marked the low individual TCU total of the week. Freshman Johnny Antle finished his first official tournament as a Frog in a tie for 86th place at +8 following a Friday 77.
Also competing for the Frogs this week, but not counting towards the team score, were senior Scott Roudebush and sophomore Daniel Jennevret. Roudebush tied for 80th place at +6, while Jenneveret shot +17 to tie for 107th.
TCU returns to the mainland to continue its spring season Feb. 27 through March 1 at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla.
