The Horned Frogs, who didn't allow the Bearkats to record a shot attempt until the 33rd minute of the match, continually pressured SHSU throughout the day, posting a 37-5 shot advantage at Jane Justin Field. Overall, 16 different Frogs recorded shot attempts on Sunday, including seven by Castleberry, who just missed on several scoring opportunities early and often against Sam Houston State.
"I thought we were working hard in the first half, but weren't making their backline have to defend at all," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "I was pleased with how we responded in the second half. We really buckled down and played pretty good."
TCU, who faced very little pressure from the Bearkats on Sunday, opened the contest posting three-straight shots, but SHSU made two consecutive saves, including a team save off a bounce to keep Chelsea Cody from lighting up the scoreboard.
Castleberry netted the first goal of the match, darting by Sam Houston State goalkeeper Jenny Pence to give TCU an early lead 4 minutes into the contest. A few moments later, junior Katie Taylor just missed cracking the scoring column off a corner kick by Kristen Barg. Taylor received the ball from the freshman on the run, but her header missed, sailing over the top half of the goal.
In the 23rd minute, Jordan Calhoun appeared to have given TCU a comfortable 2-0 advantage in the match off a breakaway, but her shot curved to the right. Following a shot by Taylor, Mechalske rocketed the ball towards the back of the net from the left side of the box, but Pence was able to keep the Frogs off the board, diving on the ball before it crossed the goal in the 33rd minute.
Following halftime, Taylor increased the TCU lead to 2-0, trailing a shot by senior Jackie Torda. On the play, Torda fired a shot towards the goal, but a Bearkat defender darted in front of the play, leaving the ball to Taylor, who slid in to score her second goal of the season.
TCU kept the pressure on Sam Houston State following Taylor's goal as three different Horned Frogs just missed on consecutive trips down the pitch. In the 61st minute, Castleberry, a McKinney native, netted her second goal of the day off an assist by Cody. Castleberry took a pass from the senior and proceeded to weave through SHSU defenders to beat a diving Pence at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
Mechalske increased the Frog lead to 4-0 halfway through the second half, splitting two Bearkat defenders to score from the middle of the field. Castleberry appeared to have her first career hat-trick as a Horned Frog off a pass from Kaylie Garcia in the 68th minute, but Pence came up with a big save to keep the score at 4-0 in favor of TCU.
Late in the second half, the Purple and White missed on three-straight scoring opportunities following a corner kick by Mechalske. Freshman Maddy Courvoisier appeared to have scored off a header, but her shot was knocked out by Pence in the 76th minute. Nikki Wilbur followed with a shot of her own, but couldn't crack the Bearkat defense 7 seconds later.
In the 77th minute, Barg continued the Horned Frog scoring, beating the SHSU defense into the box and punching the ball past Pence. The goal for Barg was her first career goal in a TCU uniform.
Following a shot by Ashley Jones, Garcia put the finishing touches on a dominating day at Jane Justin Field, scoring off an assist by Jones in the 88th minute.
Overall, TCU had nine different players record multiple shot attempts on Sunday. The Frogs, who played in front of 1,078 spectators, played a total of 25 players on Sunday.
TCU simply dominated Sam Houston State, holding a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks for the match. Pence, who faced constant pressure from the Frogs throughout the contest, made 14 of SHSU's 16 saves. Sophomore Kira Michelson-Bartlett, who replaced starter Kelsey Walters in the second half, posted three saves.
With the win, TCU moved to 2-2-0 on the season, while Sam Houston State dropped to 0-4-0 on the year.
The Horned Frogs will open the month of September against Houston next Friday night. Start time for the match at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
