
Varsity Tops Alumni In Annual Match Up

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU volleyball team gave the fans a taste of what is to come in 2010 with a dominating 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-19) victory over the alumni squad Saturday night at the University Rec Center. Christy Hudson led the varsity squad with 14 kills, while Kourtney Edwards and Lauren Otto each notched four kills each.
"The alumni played a great match," raved head coach Prentice Lewis. "It was great to watch a lot of my ex-athletes play a solid match. It was an intense match and both teams wanted to win. That's a great thing for us to have at this point in the preseason."
"We are excited about the 2010 season! All of our outside hitters hit over .300 and it was a great effort by all involved."
Irene Hester had a solid day at the net with 10 kills, while Kristen Hester had nine. Defensively, Sarah Joeckel led the varsity squad with 11 digs, while four others pitched in with eight digs. The alumni were led by 11 digs by Loren Barry and 10 from Jenn Cuca Vegors.
The Varsity and Alumni squads played a close first set as the big guns for both sides were firing on all cylinders. Christy Hudson gave the varsity team an early advantage, but Kourtney Edwards, Lauren Otto and LeMeita Smith responded with blocks and kills to keep the alumni close.
Trailing 8-6, the alumni went on a roll behind the serving of Otto. The 2009 graduate served the alumni to an 11-8 lead, helped along by kills from Devon Kirk and Smith. The varsity squad had an answer behind the service line in Megan Munce, who served up three aces in a 7-0 run that turned the deficit into a 15-11 lead.
Kristen Hester joined the attack and rattled off back-to-back kills to push the lead out to seven, 21-14. Her solo block on gave the Frogs set point and Munce finished off the 25-17 victory with her lone kill of the set.
Two kills each by Hudson and Irene Hester and a couple miscues from the Alumni helped the Frogs build 6-0 lead. Three kills from Sloane Sunstrum built the varsity lead to 11-3.
The varsity continued to build its lead as Yvonne Igodan got her first taste of collegiate action and pitched in two kills. Sunstrum gave the varsity set point and Munce locked up the 25-13 set two win with a blast in the middle.
The third set proved to be the most competitive of the night as the alumni pushed the varsity squad, tying the set at 14 on a kill by Jenn Cuca Vegors. Irene Hester broke the tie with back-to-back blasts only to see the alumni charge back to tie the set at 16.
Hudson spurred a 3-0 rally that put the Frogs back on top 19-16 and Igodan made it a four-point advantage with her third kill of the night. Jordan Raines got in on the offensive attack with two kills to push the Frog lead to six, 23-17 and Kristen Hester locked up the win with her ninth kill of the night.
The Frogs will hit the road for the 2010 season opener which is set for 4 p.m. against Houston at the Texas Invitational in Austin.
