FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU sophomore Lexie Estrada recently sat down to share her thoughts on the 2010-11 season and much more.
Estrada, a Bakersfield, Calif., native, finished her freshman year with a 4-2-1 record in Western Horsemanship. During the season, Estrada upended Marissa Dalton of Oklahoma State, 75-72, in Horsemanship. By defeating Dalton, Estrada became the first rider in the nation to defeat Dalton this past spring.
What have you been doing this summer?
I have been helping out at my grandparents business, taking care of a couple of horses, staying in shape, going to the beach and spending time with family. I have also been taking Reining lessons, which have been a blast.
How do you think the 2009-10 Equestrian season went?
As a freshman, I was not necessarily sure what to expect from our team because it is much different than showing your own horse. I focused on learning the real ins-and-outs of the sport as well as supporting and learning from my teammates. We took something from every match and worked to make each performance better than the last. Collectively, I thought we had an exceptional 2009-10 season.
How do you feel this season will go?
Thankfully, we only lost one person from the Western team, Carrie von Uhlit. Even though she was a very important person for our team, we still have a great amount of knowledge and talent. I am confident we can make this season better than our last.
What do you like the most about Equestrian?
I like the fact that a 1,200-pound animal is my teammate. We have the challenge of figuring each other out, bonding and effectively working together to lay out a good pattern. Then you factor in the discipline of riding, the many applicable life lessons and all that horses can teach you about yourself and it is an all around incredible experience.
If you could choose another sport what would you play?
I would be a surfer or play soccer.
What is your favorite thing about TCU?
My favorite things are the small campus and small class sizes. I also like how very personal it is here.
If you were stranded on an island what two things would you need?
Assuming I would not be fighting off any aliens like in Predator, I would need a waterproof solar powered satellite phone and knife.
What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken. It was a childhood favorite of mine.
If you could go anywhere in the would where would it be and why?
I would go to Athens, Greece, because it is one of the world's oldest cities and it looks breathtaking.
What is your favorite singer or song to listen to right now?
I have recently rediscovered my old favorites by Kings of Leon, The Cool Kids, Tyga and Jupiter Rising. I have a pretty diverse taste in music.
