Frogs Third After Day Two at NCAA Regional

BRYAN, Texas—TCU sits in third place following Friday's second round of competition at the NCAA South Central Men's Golf Championships at the Traditions Golf Club. The squad, which opened the day tied for the team lead, trails leader Texas A&M by only three strokes at eight-under par entering Saturday's final round.
The Frogs, seeded fifth, need to finish among the regional's top-5 squads to clinch an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, which will be held June 2-5 in Ooltewah, Tenn. The Aggies pace the field at 11-under-par, while Texas Tech ranks second at -10. Rounding out the top-five teams after TCU are Wichita State in fourth place (-3) and Pepperdine (-2) in fifth.
In the individual competition, two Frogs are locked in four-way battle for third place in sophomore Johan de Beer and freshman Daniel Jennevret. Jennevret entered the round owning a share of the overall lead at -6 before carding an even-par 72 Friday, while de Beer saw his name shoot up the leaderboard with a five-under 67 to climb from his previous position of 12th. The score for de Beer ranked second-lowest among Friday's rounds, trailing only a 66 by Baylor's Payne Gniewek. Dustin Garza (Wichita State) and Ignacio Elvira (Texas A&M) top the individual leaderboard at -8 after posting identical opening rounds of 68 and 70.
Senior Travis Woolf shot a three-over-par 75 to drop into a tie for 20th place at even par for the tournament, while freshman Pontus Gad ranked tied for 39th at +5 following Friday's six-over-par 78. Sophomore Eli Cole shot 77 and will enter the Saturday's final round tied for 51st at +7.
Competition at the NCAA South Central Regional concludes Saturday at the Traditions Golf Club. Each of TCU's five players is scheduled to tee of between 8:40 and 9:20 a.m.
