TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The TCU women's tennis team fell to No. 18 South Carolina by the score of 4-2 Friday in the opening round of the NCAA Team Championships at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
"Congratulations to South Carolina," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "They were very strong physically today and they handled the heat well. I'm proud of our team. We have fought through a lot this year and we have definitely gotten better in all areas. We look forward to using what we have learned for next season."
The evening began with TCU scratching to a 1-0 advantage, picking up the doubles point in tiebreaking fashion from the top court. The Frogs' tandem of Idunn Hertzberg and Gaby Mastromarino got the ball rolling, cruising to an 8-2 win from the third court over the Gamecocks' team of Adriana Pereira and Madeleine Saari-Bystrom.
The Purple and White sealed the doubles tally from the top flight as Kayla Duncan and Katariina Tuohimaa, ranked No. 46 nationally, picked up a big ranked win over South Carolina's 15th-ranked duo of Ana Marija Zubori and Dijana Stojic, 9-8 (4). The Frogs' pairing had a 7-5 lead in the match before watching the Gamecocks three straight games to take an 8-7 advantage. In the tiebreaker, TCU jumped to an early 2-0 lead and never relinquished it.
The win is the highest-ranked triumph for the all-MWC duo, moving their record to 14-6 overall and 6-1 against nationally ranked opponents. Duncan and Tuohimaa have taken down three top-30 tandems this spring.
The tide turned in singles play, as the Gamecocks stormed to take the first two matches to take a 2-1 lead in the team score. No. 111 Anya Morgina claimed the first win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Duncan from the No. 3 court, while USC's Miljana Jocic upended Hertzberg from the fourth flight, 6-2, 6-0.
Mastromarino helped the Frogs cut back into the match, evening the team tally at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win from the No. 5 position over Pereira. The victory was the ninth-straight triumph for the Tequesta, Fla., native. Mastromarino ended her sophomore campaign with an 11-13 spring record.
South Carolina would follow seconds later with a point from the top courts, as No. 39 Zubori defeated TCU senior Nina Munch-Soegaard in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The win moved the Gamecocks to within one match from moving into the second round of the NCAA Championships.
In the end, No. 87 Stojic proved to be too much for Tuohimaa at the No. 2 position, toppling the TCU junior in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Duncan and Tuohimaa will represent TCU at the NCAA Doubles Championship, while Munch-Soegaard will compete in the NCAA Singles Championship, May 25-31, in Athens, Ga.
