TCU Defeats UC Irvine On The Road, 5-2

IRVINE, Calif. - The No 73 TCU women's tennis team found a way to win Thursday with only five players against No. 64 UC Irvine by the score of 5-2 at Anteater Tennis Stadium. The Horned Frogs forfeited the No. 3 doubles match and the No. 6 singles match prior to the start of the match.
"The Frogs fought hard today," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said after coaching in his 100th match. "It was a warm and sunny southern California day today and they battled hard to bring home a nice victory. I'm proud of everybody."
TCU won the remaining two doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Sophomore Kayla Duncan and junior Katariina Tuohimaa defeated Becka Kwan and Courtney Byron, 8-5, in the No. 1 match, while junior Idunn Hertzberg and senior Nina Munch-Soegaard downed Brooke Bartlett and Kristina Smith from the second flight, 8-3.
In singles, sophomore Gaby Mastromarino gave TCU a 2-1 advantage, as she defeated Miranda Young 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 match. Tuohimaa followed by beating Kwan 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 5 position to give the Frogs a 3-1 lead. No. 63 Munch-Soegaard defeated Byron, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (1), from the top court to clinch the team victory for TCU.
With the win, Munch-Soegaard moves into a tie for sixth place on the Frogs' all-time career singles victories list with Angela Bartzen. The 2009 ITA All-American has now gathered a 90-41 (.687) singles record in her time as a Horned Frog and is six wins short of matching Teresa Dobson for fifth place honors.
No. 90 Duncan downed Bartlett 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 2 match for a 5-1 Frog lead. Smith beat Hertzberg 6-4, 6-7 (6), 7-5 in the No. 4 match to conclude the match with a 5-2 score.
