ALBUQUERQUE - The TCU women's tennis team concluded the 2010 regular season with a Mountain West Conference win over New Mexico Sunday, 6-1, at the Linda Estes Tennis Center. The victory snaps a four-match losing streak for the Horned Frogs against the league, dropping all four matches by 4-3 scores.
"We finished the regular season and conference with a victory," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "We are looking forward to the tournament and preparing this week and hoping to win a fifth-straight MWC trophy and make NCAA's for a seventh-straight time. Our goals are now right in front of us and we look forward to the challenge."
For the first time in three matches, TCU won the doubles point. After senior Nina Munch-Soegaard and junior Idunn Hertzberg won from the No. 2 position, the 50th-ranked squad of sophomore Kayla Duncan and junior Katariina Tuohimaa clinched the early 1-0 advantage from the top court.
In singles, Tuohimaa gave TCU a 2-0 advantage, as she defeated Kristin Eggleston, 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 2 match. No. 52 Munch-Soegaard followed by beating Anya Villanueva, 6-3, 6-2 at the top court to give the Frogs a 3-0 lead. The senior from Amarillo, Texas moved just three wins from tying Teresa Dobson for the fifth-most career singles victories in TCU history.
Newcomer Shalini Sahoo took down Manumea Durie, 6-1, 6-3, from the fifth flight for her first career collegiate win to clinch the team victory for TCU. Sahoo saw her first action with the Frogs this weekend after missing the first three months of the season sue to a knee injury.
"It felt really good to be out here with my team this weekend," Sahoo said. "I have been wanting to travel with the team all season and I could really feel my body trying to work hard after missing so many matches."
After the Frogs garnered the team win, Hertzberg downed Laura Richardson, 6-3, 6-2, for her fifth MWC win of the year in the No. 4 match, while junior Maria Babanova ended the evening with a 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 victory over Michaela Oldani from the No. 6 court.
TCU (7-16, 4-4 MWC) will now begin preparations to defend their MWC tournament title at the 2010 MWC Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., April 28-May 1.
