WACO, Texas - The nationally ranked TCU equestrian squad made program history this past weekend, wrapping up competition in fourth-place in the final team standings at the 2010 Varsity Equestrian National Championships. The fourth-place finish is the highest placing for a Horned Frog squad at nationals.
"The Hunt Seat team came together at the right time this week. I can't say enough about Coach Huffman and the incredible job she has done this year. It is always hard to come in and take over a program and she has been awesome," said head coach Gary Reynolds."
The TCU Western squad collected fifth-place, while the Hunt Seat team placed sixth overall on the final day of the championships at the Heart O' Texas Fair Complex on Saturday.
The No. 4 Horned Frogs dominated No. 3 Oklahoma State in Western, upending the Cowgirls 6-2 on Saturday afternoon. Overall, the Frogs went 3-1 in both Horsemanship and Reining, respectively. TCU outscored the Cowgirls, 1,123.5-979.5.
On the Hunt Seat side, No. 12 TCU dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 6 Oklahoma State to earn sixth-place at nationals, which is the highest finish ever on the English side at nationals.
"It was an unusual nationals all the way around. Only one of the top seeded Western teams remained on the last day. It was the year of the upset, but I am really proud of this team and the way that they responded and made the changes to get us to fourth-place," said Reynolds.
Georgia won the overall team title in Waco, collecting their fifth Varsity Equestrian National Championship. The Bulldogs also won the Hunt Seat title, while Texas A&M captured the Western crown.
"There were so many amazing performances at nationals this year. Every member of the team stepped up to contribute. It was truly a team effort," said Reynolds.
TCU closed its season at the 2010 Varsity Equestrian National Championships.
