TCU Equestrian Advances At Nationals

WACO, Texas - The TCU equestrian program went 2-0 in competition on Friday as both the English and Western squads scored victories over Fresno State and Baylor, respectively, at the 2010 Varsity Equestrian National Championships."These two teams have been fantastic this week. I am so proud of them," said head coach Gary Reynolds. "We will face Oklahoma State on both sides tomorrow and need to keep doing what we are doing. We just need to keep moving ahead."
The No. 12 Hunt Seat team dominated the No. 8 Bulldogs on Friday, collecting a 6-2 decision to advance to the next round against No. 6 Oklahoma State. Against FSU, the Horned Frogs went 3-1 in both Equitation over Fences and Equitation on the Flat, respectively. Overall, the Frogs outscored Fresno State, 1,202-1,028, at the Heart O' Texas Fair Complex.
Junior Milana Trimino continued her winning ways at nationals, defeating Caitlin Marshall, 163-149. Trimino is now 3-0 in competition in Waco. Haley Jacobi and Tassie Munroe were also victorious on Friday, defeating Lisa Beach and Kimberly Steinbuch.
In Equitation over Fences, Victoria Lee remained undefeated at the championships, upending Jennifer Jory, 157-140. Taylor Frederick also scored a victory in the event, downing Lisa Wells, 156-146. Finally, Lauren Quiroz, a junior form Villa Park, Ill., tallied the Frogs' final point, defeating Jessica Kissell, 148-138.
"Coach Huffman has done a fantastic job of preparing this Hunt Seat team. I am so happy for her and them," said Reynolds.
The No. 4 Western squad dismantled No. 9 Baylor on Friday night, sweeping the Reining section to claim a 7-1 victory over the Bears. With the win, TCU advanced to the next round to face No. 3 Oklahoma State for fifth-place at nationals.
Senior Carrie von Uhlit opened Reining, defeating Madelyn Mooney, 138.5-135. Kelsey Huffman also secured a victory for the Frogs in the event, winning 136.5-128 over Olivia Rogers. Ashton Mickunas and Kolby Simonson scored the final two points for the Purple and White in Reining, upending Ellie Powell and Amber Mooney, respectively.
In Horsemanship, Courtney Chown downed Ashley Garza, 145.5-142.5, while Huffman claimed her second victory of the day, defeating Lindsey Tomko, 140-130. Von Uhlit also recorded her second-straight decision, defeating Lindsay Douglas, 145.5-143.5.
In the individual bracket, Chown, a sophomore from Pilot Point, advanced to the second round to face No. 1 seed Caroline Gunn of Texas A&M. Chown, who is the No. 4 seed at nationals, defeated Oklahoma State's Marissa Dalton. Huffman was also victorious in Horsemanship, downing Auburn's Indy Roper. The junior will take on Texas A&M's Carey Nowacek on Saturday.
In Reining, von Uhlit, who is looking to claim her second-straight National Championship in the event, dropped Huffman to advance to the next round at the Heart O' Texas Fair Complex.
TCU will conclude action at the 2010 Varsity Equestrian National Championships on Saturday.
