MIAMI, Fla. - The No. 72 Horned Frog women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision on the road against No. 18 Miami (FL) Monday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
"Miami is always well prepared and they are a well-coached group. They are a very difficult team to beat at home," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "We played really hard and I'm proud of the team. We just have to keeping fighting and believing and we will turn the corner here shortly."
The Hurricanes stormed through the doubles portion of the match, sweeping the Frogs on all three courts. After TCU dropped its first match on court No. 2, the 'Canes team of Gabriela Mejia and Danielle Mills clinched the early point with an 8-1 decision over the Frogs' top squad of sophomore Kayla Duncan and junior Katariina Tuohimaa.
Miami kept rolling to start singles play, as TCU sophomore Gaby Mastromarino was forced to retire in her match from the sixth flight, giving UM a 2-0 advantage. Three-time All-American Laura Vallverdu followed up with a 6-3, 6-1 win over the Frogs' Nina Munch-Soegaard. With a 3-0 lead in the match, Miami needed one more win to clinch victory as Mejia sealed the deal, upending junior Maria Babanova from the fifth spot, 6-3, 6-0.
The two tightest matches came from the third and fourth flights. Tuohimaa pushed her match against No. 55 Bartenstein into a third-set super-tiebreaker after taking the second set. The Helsinki, Finland product dropped the match in the end, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (8). Junior Idunn Hertzberg also had a chance to win Monday, falling 7-6 (4), 3-6, 1-0 (2).
TCU will have to bounce back at home, as the Frogs return to the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center to host No. 19 Virginia Commonwealth at 2 p.m., Thursday.
