FULLERTON, Calif. - The No. 6 Cal State Fullerton scored two late runs to hand No. 9 TCU its first loss of the season, 6-4. The Horned Frogs battled back from a 4-2 deficit but couldn't muster any offense in the late innings. Matt Curry and Jason Coats hit solo home runs for the Frogs.A one-out error at second base by the Titans turned into an early 1-0 lead for the Horned Frogs. Taylor Featherston reached on the error and moved to second on a walk to Bryan Holaday. With two outs in the inning, Titan starter Noe Ramirez unleashed back-to-back wild pitches to bring in Featherston with the first run of the game.
TCU failed to capitalize on a bases loaded with one out situation in the top of the second and the Titans used that momentum to tie the game at one. Walker Moore doubled with one out to plate David Carillo who was hit with a one-out offering from Purke.
Matt Curry made sure the tie didn't hold as he blasted an offering from Ramirez over the right field fence for a 2-1 Frog lead.
The see-saw battle continued as the Titans picked up three runs on three hits in the third to open up a 4-2 lead. Christian Colon tied the game with a double and a one out single from Moore tied the game, chasing Purke from the game. A two-out bases loaded walk to Ivory Thomas put the Titans up two.
Purke surrendered four runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings of work. The freshman struck out two, walked two and hit two on the afternoon.
TCU inched closer in the top of the fourth, picking up a run to make it a 4-3 contest. Jerome Pena singled with one out and raced home on a double from Aaron Schultz. Jason Coats completed the comeback in the top of the fifth with a solo home run off the scoreboard in left center.
Trent Appleby did his job in relief, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the Frogs, allowing just one hit and one walk to go along with two strikeouts.
A lead-off double in the sixth inning translated into the go-ahead run for the Titans. Cal State Fullerton executed small ball to perfection as a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Nick Ramirez broke the scoreless tied.
Paul Gerrish (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up a run in 2/3 of an inning of work. Erik Miller pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, giving up a run on three hits.
Cal State Fullerton picked up a big insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 6-4 lead. A lead-off single from Gary Brown came around to score on a two-out hit from Nick Rameriz.
Despite a one-out double by Holaday in the ninth, the Frogs couldn't find the big hit they were looking for as they came up two runs short.
TCU falls to 4-1 on the season.
