TCU Struggles Against SMU Wednesday

FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 23 Horned Frog women's tennis team fell to cross-town rival No. 30 SMU Wednesday night, 7-0, at the indoor facility at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. TCU falls to 1-3 for the year, while the Mustangs advance to 10-1.
"It was a nice performance tonight by SMU," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "They've got a couple of new players that are really solid and talented. We ran into a really good team tonight and unfortunately we didn't have our best performance. I thought everyone gave a really good effort and we are looking forward to our next home match with Arkansas Sunday."
SMU stormed through the doubles portion of the match, sweeping the Frogs on all three courts. After TCU dropped its first match on court No. 3, the Mustangs' team of Katerina Vankova and Aleksandra Malyarchikova clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 decision over the Frogs' top squad of sophomore Kayla Duncan and senior Nina Munch-Soegaard.
The Mustangs kept rolling to start singles play, as Edyta Cieplucha toppled TCU's Maria Babanova on the No. 5 court, 6-3, 6-0, and junior Katariina Tuohimaa dropped her match to Vankova at the No. 3 position, 6-3, 6-2. With a 3-0 advantage in the match, SMU needed one more win to clinch victory and No. 47 Marta Lesniak would capture the win for the Mustangs, upending Munch-Soegaard from the top spot, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.
Duncan battled hard in her opening set at No. 2, driving the frame to a tiebreaker to win 7-6 (8). However, the Winston-Salem, N.C., native did not have enough in the tank to finish the job, falling to Malyarchikova, 6-7 (8), 6-3, 10-3. Junior Idunn Hertzberg also showed her ability to fight back in a tough three-set match, falling, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
TCU will have to bounce back quickly, as the Frogs return to the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center to host Arkansas at Noon on Sunday.
