FORT WORTH - TCU's Athletic Department has named Brooke Beeler and Emanuel Brighiu as its Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 1.
Beeler recorded the first collegiate victory of her TCU career and the first title by a Horned Frog since Valentine Derrey won the 2007 Lady Puerto Rico Classic.
The junior from Butler, Ill., finished with a 4-under-par total of 212 at The Alamo Invitational at San Antonio's Briggs Ranch Golf Course.
Her 11 birdies and 2 eagles on the week helped lift the Horned Frogs to their first team title since the 2007 Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, S.C. The Frogs finished three strokes clear of second-place Texas A&M.
On the men's side, Brighiu won four matches at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships before falling in the semifinals. The senior from Iasi, Romania, defeated three seeded players on his way to his best career finish at the event.
Brighiu notched a 7-5, 4-6, 603 win over Texas' Ed Corrie, who entered the event as the No. 18-ranked singles player in the nation. Corrie is the highest-ranked player Brighiu has downed in his TCU career.
He also downed seeded players Alberto Bautista of Texas A&M and Luis Grangeiro of Baylor, along with reaching the quarterfinals of the doubles bracket with partner Christopher Price.
