LARAMIE, Wyo. - TCU's men's swimming and diving team recorded a landmark victory when it downed Wyoming, 168-132, in Mountain West Conference action on Friday night at the Laramie Community Recreation Center. The TCU women fell to the Cowgirls, 190-104.
The win was the 400th in TCU history and the 400th in TCU coach Richard Sybesma's illustrious 32-year career. For the 2010 season, TCU improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the MWC. Additionally, the Frogs won their 11th-straight dual meet, including nine straight against league foes.
"This is a tremendous win for our program," TCU coach Richard Sybesma said. "I'm proud of the guys for how hard they worked tonight. The women swam hard, but that is a very good Wyoming team over there. It's very tough to win when you're swimming at altitude."
The Horned Frog men got out to a very quick start in the dual, building an early lead after winning six of the first eight events. The TCU 200-medley relay team of Laszlo Gyurko, Edgar Crespo, Andy Garcia-Montes and Rourke Barrett struck first for the Frogs, notching a winning time of 1:32.05 for 11 early team points.
The red-hot Gyurko wasn't done yet, though, before the first break. The Szekszard, Hungary native picked up another win for TCU in the 100-backstroke. He touched the wall in 50.72, ahead of teammate senior Jeff Gettel, who took second-place honors with a 51.37.
In the 200-butterfly and 50-freestyle, the Frogs got thrilling victories from Friedrich Grott and Devin Price, respectively. Grott swam a last 50 yards of 30.18, including a blazing-fast like 25 yards to tap in 1:55.95, two-hundredths of a second ahead of second place.
Price's 50-freestyle win was equally as dramatic, as the sophomore from Tucson, Ariz., clocked a 21.42. He edged out Wyoming's Jeff Frey, whose official time was 21.43.
Crespo, TCU's breaststroke specialist, grabbed a win in the 100-breaststroke that also had its share of drama. The Panama City, Panama, native touched the wall in 56.58, continuing his unbeaten streak in the 100-breast in his TCU career. His time was less than two-tenths faster than Brandon Fischer of Wyoming.
The Frogs got another win before the first break from freshman Michael Franz. He clocked a 9:49.02 in the 1000-freestyle after taking control of the distance event about 200 yards from the finish line.
The Carmichael, Calif., later added his third win of the year in the distance events, notching a nail-biter win in the 500-free. His winning time of 4:41.77 was three-hundredths of a second faster than Wyoming's Ethan Griffel.
In the 100-freestyle, the meet's first event after the first intermission, Gyurko went right back to work. He claimed another win with a time of 46.72. It was his third individual of the season to go along with four relay wins.
TCU would go 1-2 in two other events on the night when Gettel won the 200-backstroke with a 1:53.25, ahead of Nelson Head, who clocked a 1:53.80. In the 100-butterfly, Crespo picked up a win in 51.31, while Edgar Peyro finished second in 51.45.
The Frogs capped the meet in style after the second break, grabbing wins in the 200-individual medley and 400-freestyle relay. Garcia-Montes picked up his second 200-IM win of the season with a time of 1:55.12.
The TCU team of Gyurko, Barrett, Peyro and Price finished things off for TCU with a winning time of 3:04.98. The win gave Gyurko a 4-0 record for the night.
Wyoming dropped to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.
On the women's side, senior Maria Paula Alvarez continued her winning ways, picking up her sixth and seventh wins of the year in the 1000-freestyle and 500-freestyle.
The Cali, Colombia, native notched a 10:41.45 in the 1000-free after controlling the race for its entirety. Her 500-free win came later in the meet, notching a time of 5:06.90. The 500-free race was close until Alvarez slammed the door in the final lap.
Sophomore sprinter Sabine Rasch recorded wins in the 100-freestyle and 100-butterfly, while also finishing one-hundredth of a second behind the winner in the 50-freestyle.
The Luckenwalde, Germany, native won the 100-free for the third time this season with a time of 51.24. Her 100-butterfly win was her first individual win outside of the sprint freestyle events and came in a time of 56.63.
In the 50-free, Rasch recorded a 23.50 for second place, tapping just behind Wyoming's Kelsey Conci, who finished in 23.49.

Vincent added a second-place finish in the 100-fly, with a time of 56.63. She finished behind only TCU's Rasch.
TCU notched a pair of second-place finishes in the meet's two relays, clocking a 1:47.60 in the 200-medley relay and a 3:29.74 in the 400-freestyle relay.
The women fell to 2-2 overall and 2-2 in the MWC. Wyoming improved to 6-0, 2-0.
Both teams return to action Dec. 5 at the U.S. Short Course Nationals in Columbus, Ohio. TCU does not return to dual-meets until Jan. 7 when the Frogs visit UNLV.
