The first set was chalk full of back-and-forth action as the teams battled through 10 ties and four lead changes. BYU took the early match lead, 13-11, only to see TCU battle back to tie the set at 14. Two straight Cougar errors allowed the Frogs to tie the set and Kristen Hester put the Frogs on top with a kill to the back court. A battle ensued as neither team could extend their lead beyond one.
Tied at 18, a Frog service error gave the Cougars the advantage and they were able to stretch their lead to three, 21-18. A blast from Hudson pulled the Frogs back within two, 22-19, but a kill by Christie Carpenter halted the Frog rally. BYU claimed the 25-20 set one win with a block on the outside.
Another tight affair greeted the teams in the second set as the Frogs fought to get back in the match. The Horned Frogs battled through 12 ties and four lead changes to even the set at one with a 25-23 win. With the set tied at 11, a block from Hudson and Kristen Hester put the Frogs in front and TCU was able to push the advantage to two points on an attacking error by the Cougars.
BYU kept the set close through the middle portion of the set, but TCU was once again able to push its lead to two on a blast from Irene Hester. The Frogs milked the two point advantage the rest of the way. Raines gave TCU set point and Irene Hester finished off the 25-23 set two win with her eighth blast of the set.
The third set featured nine ties and two lead changes, but it was the second lead change that proved to be the Frogs' undoing. The Frogs had the early advantage, 10-6, but a crushing 8-1 run by the Cougars turned the Frog lead into a 14-11 deficit.
TCU would tie the set at 14 as Hudson came through with two kills from the right side, but Jennifer Hansom put the Cougars back on top, 15-14, and BYU would never relinquish its lead. The Frogs would get the set tied at 23 on a kill from Horio, but Nicole Warner answered to give the Cougars set point and Stephanie Snow finished off the 25-23 set three win for BYU.
The Horned Frogs looked poised to send the match to a fifth game as they dominated the early portion of the set. The Frogs raced out to a 17-9 lead on BYU as they were firing on all cylinders. Connolly served the Frogs to a 7-3 lead as she was helped along by kills from Raines and Irene Hester. She dropped in a service ace and Raines highlighted the rush with a solo block on the outside. Igodan and Hudson got in on the block party to put the Frogs up 16-8.
Trailing 17-9, the Cougars began to mount their comeback. They put together a 13-6 run to creep back within one, 23-22. A kill from Hudson seemed to stall the Cougar momentum as it gave the Frogs set point. BYU fought off two set points to even the set at 24. A kill by Hansom gave the Cougars their first lead of the set and an ace locked up the match victory.
TCU falls to 12-10 on the season and 3-5 in conference play. The Frogs will hit the road for a pair of league matches next weekend. TCU will be in action Friday night at Air Force. First serve is set for 8 p.m. (CST).
