POSTGAME QUOTES
No. 4 TCU 31, BYU 3
Fort Worth, Texas (Amon G. Carter Stadium)
Oct. 16, 2010
Attendance: 40,416
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
On his team's first-half performance
"First of all, I think you've got to give a lot of credit to BYU in the first half. With four or five minutes left, there were only three points. We were looking for a win, that's it."
On the offensive philosophy to throw the ball more
"If that's what works, that's what works. In ballgames, you take what people will give you. If they're going to stack the line of scrimmage, then you throw the ball. If they're going to play back, then you run it. It's kind of the way the game works."
On his team's performance as a whole
"We got some breaks. I thought we played a lot better in special teams today. We're glad to come out with a win."
On scoring two touchdowns late in the first half
"It was big. We needed to get some points on the board. I kind of got the feeling they could keep in there. To be able to get those two scores and go up 17-0, I thought was really big for us."
On his defense putting together another dominant performance
"They're paying attention and obviously, there is some accountability. There is some pride about what we've done. Last year we had four or five of our pro guys come back the week before BYU and talked to our kids. Today, Daryl Washington came back from Arizona. There is a lot of pride in coming to watch our guys play and how we do things."
BYU Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall
On the game
"TCU is a very good football team. They are very well coached and they execute very well. They have great football players and I was impressed with them today. I was disappointed that the game was not closer. I think it could have been closer and I was not able to help our team execute at a high enough level to make that happen."
On getting out to a good start in the first half
"It was very critical to play well early against them and it was 3-0 halfway through the second quarter. We ended up giving up a turnover and a quick score right there in the last 1:30 in the second quarter and that was frustrating. It was good to at least stay close in a heart-filled battle game with a score that was reasonable at that time."
On his team's effort
"I thought the effort was very good from what I saw. I thought it was a very good football team and they played hard."
On containing TCU's rushing attack
"TCU was running it at about 270 a game and we did not want to allow them to be multi-dimensional and they weren't. They were able to complete a couple of passes over the top where execution was not as clean. But there were plays and calls that we would make again in to those same situations. I think we played the run effectively. We could not allow them to be two dimensional."
TCU Quarterback Andy Dalton
On the quality of this win
"It was a big win for us, BYU is a good team. Their record doesn't show how good they are. We knew we had to come out and fight. Early on in the first half we hadn't scored, but we finally got rolling. The big interception by Tank Carder gave us momentum and we drove and scored again. It's a big win for us."
On having success through the air
"We had to rely on the passing game a little bit more and we just took what they gave us. We had some good short completions and we were able to make some good passes over the top. We had a good game plan, and we executed well."
On freshman receiver Josh Boyce
"He has done a great job. He is a very explosive player. I have been getting him the ball and he has been making some plays."
TCU Safety Tejay Johnson
On TCU's defensive philosophy
"Our motto as a defensive is to 'suffocate'. To hold the offense to fewer points is great, but in the end it's all about winning the game. That's the main stat that counts. We look at it from week to week and try to get better. We feel like we are progressing, we are getting better every week. At halftime we just talked about finishing and carrying over what we were doing in the first half to the second half."
On moving to 7-0
"It is a great win. It is the win that got us to 7-0 and that is the goal. We are just trying to move up the pyramid to next week. The main goal is to just try to win by one point. We knew it would be a tough game with BYU being a great team."
On the defense continuing to play well
"It was exciting, to see our defense progress and be where we are now. We are clicking and playing together. We really saw the defense play together today. It is hard to compare this year's team to previous years, but when you see the results equal out from year to year, it seems to be about the same."
