NEW ORLEANS -- TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes has been named to the five-member 2009 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Senior All-America First Team.
Hughes is joined on the squad by Missouri offensive lineman Kurtis Gregory, Central Michigan quarterback Dan LeFevour, Texas quarterback Colt McCoy and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.
Tebow was named the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award winner for the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Hughes is only the second two-time consensus All-American in TCU history (Darrell Lester, 1934-35). The 2009 recipient of the Ted Hendricks Award and Lott Trophy, Hughes also was selected for a Bank of America Local Hero Award for his work in the community.
Hughes is on pace to graduate this spring, in four years, with a degree in communications. He completed 18 academic hours in the fall semester.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The award identifies personal qualities that define a complete student-athlete, with criteria including excellence in the classroom, outstanding character and community service in addition to competition on the field.
