MIDLAND, Texas - The TCU doubles tandem of senior Megan Alexander and Kayla Duncan earned a pair of wins and advanced into the semifinals at the Racquet Club Invitational Saturday.
Alexander and Duncan started the day with a victory against the duo of Mary Weatherholt and Stefanie Weinstein of Nebraska, 8-5. The Horned Frog pairing secured it's spot in the final four after disposing Texas A&M's team of Lauren Santacroce and Stephanie Davidson, 8-3. TCU will return to the court Sunday to take on the pairing of Varsha Shiva-Shankar and Rebecca Lin.
In singles action, Alexander snared a win in the round of 16 over Pepperdine's Arianna Colffer in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (4). The Dallas, Texas native then took on Baylor's Jelena Stanivuk, the top singles seed, in the quarterfinals, falling 6-2, 7-6 (7).
Duncan dropped her round of 16 match to SMU's Aleksandra Malyarchikova, 6-2, 6-4, while junior Maria Babanova fell to Pichittra Thongdach of Boise State, 7-5, 6-0. From the back draw, junior Idunn Hertzberg ended her weekend with a tough three-set defeat to Santacroce.
"We had a strong day, but we just fell short in a couple of singles matches," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "We are looking forward to competing in the doubles tomorrow. We have to play smart and play well to keep moving forward in the draw."
