COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - TCU netted two first half goals, but it wasn't enough as the Horned Frogs dropped a 3-2 decision to Denver on Sunday afternoon at the Colorado College Invitational.Following a goal by DU's Lizzy Carlson, sophomore Kristen Halverson tied the match at 1-1 in the 11th minute of the first half at Stewart Field. The goal marked Halverson's first goal in a Horned Frog uniform.
The Frogs continued to pressure the Pioneers, who are receiving votes in the NSCAA/Adidas National Poll, as Jackie Torda, Michelle Nguyen and Jordan Calhoun all connected on shots in Denver territory, but couldn't find the back of the net early in the half.
Midway through the first half, DU's Bria Beardsley put the Pioneers ahead in the match, just beating Kelsey Walters off an assist by Lizzy Carlson in the 31st minute.
Calhoun, a sophomore from Norman, Okla., knotted the contest at 2-2 in the 40th minute off assists from Kaylie Garcia and Nguyen on a corner kick. The goal, which was Calhoun's fourth of the season, moved her into sole possession of No. 5 all-time in career goals scored with 19.
Right before the break, it appeared as if freshman Elise Kensinger would crack the scoring column for the Frogs, but Denver goalkeeper Lara Campbell came up with a big save to keep the score tied at 2-2 going into halftime.
The Pioneers' Kelli Breidenbach put Denver ahead in the match in the 52nd minute off a cross from Kaitlin Bast.
With Denver clinging to a 3-2 lead late in the contest, Calhoun and Katie Taylor tried to rally the Frogs, but couldn't put the ball into the back of the net. In the 73rd minute, Taylor headed the ball towards the goal, but watched as her shot sailed wide of the goal, while Calhoun had her shot saved by Campbell.
Taylor almost tied the game at 3-3 in the 85th minute, but Campbell was up to the task again as she stopped the ball right before it crossed the goal to secure the 3-2 victory for the Pioneers.
In a back-and-fourth contest, TCU held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks, while totaling 12 shot attempts. On offense, Calhoun led the Horned Frog attack, connecting on four shot attempts, including two on goal. Walters saved three shots on Sunday, while Campbell stopped four.
With the loss, the nationally ranked Frogs dropped to 4-3-0 on the year, while Denver, who opened the invitational beating No. 15 Kansas, moved to 5-1-1 on the season.
TCU will next be in action on Sept. 18 against Weber State. Start time for the match, which will take place in Lubbock, is set for 5 p.m. CT.
