MIAMI—Ashley Fisher, a former member of the TCU men's tennis team, was part of doubles group that finished runner-up last weekend in the doubles division at the Sony Ericsson Open, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament.
Fisher and teammate and fellow Australian Stephen Huss fell in a tight three-set battle in Saturday's final to the duo of Andy Ram (Israel) and Max Mirnyi (Belarus), 6-7(4), 6-2, 10-7. Fisher and Huss, each competing in their first ATP World Tour final, were attempting to become the first Australian duo to win the Sony Ericsson Open title since Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in 2000.
The pair advanced to the final after pulling off a stunning upset of the tournament's No. 1 grouping of Bob and Mike Bryan in Thursday's semifinals, 7-6(6), 6-4. The top seed entered the tournament as a two-time defending event champion and had won 13 straight matches before being ousted by the Australians.
Prior to the Sony Ericsson Open, neither Fisher nor Huss had advanced beyond the quarterfinals at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event.
Fisher, a four-year letterwinner for TCU from 1994 through 1997, experienced a decorated career as a Horned Frog. A two-time All-American in 1996 and 1997, he won individual Southwest Conference championships at No. 5 singles in 1995 and No. 4 singles in 1996. Fisher and former Frog teammate Jason Weir-Smith finished as the runners-up in doubles competition at the 1996 NCAA Championships.
