WACO, Texas -- The American Football Coaches Association has named TCU's Gary Patterson the Region 5 Coach of the Year.
Region 5 covers the Mountain West Conference and Pac-10. As one of five regional selections, Patterson is now eligible for the 2009 AFCA National Coach of the Year award.
Patterson has led TCU to the first 12-0 record in program history. The Horned Frogs are also on the verge of their first BCS appearance.
Patterson is one of three finalists for the George Munger Award honoring the nation's top collegiate coach. He was named the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. It was the third conference coach of the year accolade for Patterson, who won similar honors in 2002 and 2005.
The 2009 Horned Frogs have just 13 seniors on the roster with only six starting.
Despite losing seven starters, including three to the NFL, off last year's top-ranked defense, TCU is second this season with its average of 233.8 yards per game allowed. The Horned Frogs narrowly trail Florida (233.1).
TCU's offense ranks fifth nationally with an average of 469.1 yards per game. The Horned Frogs have already set single-season school records for points scored (488) and total offense (5,629 yards).
