PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - TCU sophomore Kayla Duncan took down another ranked opponent at the 2009 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Wednesday at The Riviera Tennis Club.
Keeping her week in Southern California alive, Duncan took down No. 54 Emily Fraser of Virginia in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-0. Advancing into the quarterfinals of the consolation singles bracket, the Winston-Salem, N.C., native will meet No. 72 Sonja Molnar from Iowa at 12 p.m. PT Thursday.
"After coming off a long day yesterday, Kayla moved really well today," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "She got to a lot of the balls and she just needs to keep up her professional approach during match play and she'll give herself a chance to continue to have success."
Duncan has been playing superb tennis since last spring. After ending her freshman campaign on an 11-match winning streak, the 2009 all-MWC singles and doubles honoree went on to claim the singles title at the N.C. State Tar Heel Qualifier and a gold ball for her USTA Junior Clay Court Doubles crown. Currently unranked in the Campbell's/ITA Preseason Singles Rankings, Duncan has now defeated half of the ranked opponents she has tangled with this fall.
