MANHATTAN, Kan. - The TCU equestrian program won Equitation over Fences on Friday, but dropped a 12-7 decision to Kansas State University at Fox Creek Farms."It was a tough day for us overall. The Hunt Seat team started us off with an early lead in the fences, only to see the girls in Equitation on the Flat struggle with the wind and cold Kansas morning," said head coach Gary Reynolds. "When we are playing away from home, we have to play great to win. The Reining team continues to be solid and I am really proud of them."
The Horned Frogs outscored KSU, 385.5-378, in Equitation over Fences, upending the Wildcats, 3-2. Overall, TCU dropped a heartbreaking 6-5 decision in Equitation competition on Friday.
In the event, Taylor Frederick, a sophomore from Morrison, Colo., downed Kendall Marvin, 78-70, while junior Lauren Quiroz defeated Paige Sullivan on Friday morning, 77.5-77. Jennifer Whitt, a freshman from Florida, tallied the Frogs final point, dropping Bridget Doyle, 75-70.5.
"I was impressed by the strong start in Equitation over Fences. We don't like to lose and this will definitely motivate us for the two games tomorrow," said Quiroz.
Junior Jessica Hagen led the Purple and White in Equitation on the Flat, securing a 76-74 victory over Kali Yates at Fox Creek Farms. With the win, Hagen is now 5-1-0 on the year in the event.
In Reining, TCU had a solid showing in Manhattan, tying Kansas State, 2-2. Carrie von Uhlit and Ashton Mickunas both tallied points for TCU on Friday, while senior Chloe Baker just missed recording a point, falling to Tara Hallan, 70.5-70. Freshman Kolby Simonson rounded out the TCU highlights in Reining, battling Morgan Campbell to a 68.5-68.5 draw.
"Kolby Simonson really stepped up for us today," said Reynolds.
"I am really proud of the Reining team," said von Uhlit. "We continue to get stronger each game. Really, we are playing the toughest schedule of any school in the league, so we expect to have some struggles, but that will ultimately lead to success at nationals."
Courtney Chown, a Pilot Point native, tallied the lone point for the Frogs in Horsemanship, defeating Caley Coffey, 74-72.5.
TCU will continue action tomorrow at South Dakota State. Start time for the match against the Jackrabbits is set for 9 a.m.
