WACO, Texas - The TCU women's tennis team completed action at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Texas Regional Championship Monday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
"It was a solid week of tennis, but we've still got three Frogs recovering from injuries and I missed having them at this big event," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "However, the players that were able to play had a very solid week."
Sophomore Kayla Duncan started her day on the right foot, knocking off Amanda Craddock from Texas in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. Advancing into the main draw semifinals, the TCU stumbled in her match against No. 92 Nina Secerbegovic from Baylor, dropping the match, 6-0, 6-1.
The No. 9-16 seeded doubles tandem of senior Megan Alexander and junior Maria Babanova battled the tournament's third-seeded team of Marta Lezniak and Pavi Francis from SMU, falling in heartbreaking fashion, 9-8 (6).
"I was particularly pleased with Kayla's run and I was happy that she made it to the semifinals," Hammond added. "The doubles team also made a strong showing and was right there today, but just came up a little short. We are looking forward to our trip to Chapel Hill in a couple of weeks."
The Frogs' will enjoy an 18-day layoff before traveling to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the Kitty Harrison Invitational, Nov. 6-8.
