
TCU Sweeps BYU in Provo

PROVO, Utah - The TCU volleyball team picked up its first-ever win on BYU's home court with a dominating effort as they swept the Cougars (27-25, 25-23, 25-22). The Frogs were firing on all cylinders as they hit .286 as a team led by 12 kills from Kourtney Edwards."It's our first victory on television which is something that is huge for our staff and for our program," said head coach Prentice Lewis . "I am so proud of our ladies, they played hard and they came up with a 3-0 victory over BYU on their home court. That's huge."
Christy Hudson pitched in with 10 big kills to aid the Frog attack. Megan Munce dished out 39 assists and finished with seven kills and seven digs. Along with her eight kills, Lauren Otto led all defensive players with 13 digs. Katelyn Blackwood followed closely with 12.
Shades of Thursday night crept into the match as the Frogs and the Cougars battled through two tough sets, but the Frogs were able to close the deal as they stormed out to the early 2-0 match lead.
In the first set, the Frogs weathered an early push by the Cougars as they pushed out to a 14-10 lead. From that point, the Frogs turned on the heat. A kill and a solo block by Edwards made it a two-point game, 14-12.
BYU was able to maintain a three point lead, but four straight Cougar errors turned the Frog deficit into a 19-18 lead. A blast by Otto off the block and a Cougar miscue pushed the Frog lead to two. Hudson, Edwards and Munce gave the Frogs their first set point at 24-23, but the Cougars staved off two set points. Kristen Hester gave TCU its third set point and Otto sealed the deal with her second kill of the set for the 27-25 victory.
TCU stormed out to a big lead in the second set and needed every point as the Cougars made a late rally to tie the set at 23. Kristen Hester, Otto, Hudson and Munce teamed up for five kills to give the Frogs an early 5-1 lead. Megan Horio dropped in an ace and the Cougars hit the ball long to make it 7-1.
A 6-1 run BYU brought them within a point, but a blast by Irene Hester and a kill from Hudson pushed the lead back to three, 11-8. The lead continued to grow as the Frogs were firing on all cylinders. Back-to-back kills from Otto and Edwards made it an 18-12 contest, forcing a Cougar timeout.
The Cougars used the break to their advantage as they went on a furious 11-5 run to tie the set at 23. Hudson halted the Cougar rally and Munce and Edwards teamed on a loud denial on the outside to lock up the 25-23 set two victory.
In the third set, the Frogs again stormed out to a big lead and held off a Cougar charge. Otto set the tone with a solo block to open the set and the Frogs rode the momentum to an 8-3 lead. Edwards, Otto and Munce tallied kills along the way.
The Cougars rallied with a 10-5 run to tie the set at 13, but four straight blasts by Edwards helped the Frogs regain the lead. Edwards and Irene Hester teamed up on a block to make it an 18-13 contest.
BYU wouldn't go down quietly as they kept chipping away, but a kill from Otto made it 22-18 and back-to-back kills from Edwards gave the Frogs match point. After a three-point push by the Cougars, Otto ended the set with a kill to give the Frogs the 25-22 win.
TCU improves to 15-6 overall and 5-2 in league play. The Frogs return home for three straight matches beginning Thursday night against UNLV. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. at the University Rec Center.
