No. 9 TCU at Air Force
Oct. 10, 2009
Attendance: 30,104
Final: TCU 20, Air Force 17
Team Notes
*Tonight's win at Air Force could be an indicator of good things to come for TCU in MWC play. In the two previous seasons (2005, 2008) the Frogs won their MWC opener, they went on to post a combined 15-1 league record. In the two seasons (2006, 2007) TCU dropped its MWC opener, the combined league mark was 10-6.
*At 5-0, TCU is off to its best start since 2003, when it won its opening 10 games.
*The Frogs have won their opening five games for only the third time since 1942 and the ninth time (2003, 2000, 1942, 1938, 1935, 1929, 1928, 1920) in their history.
*The Horned Frogs improved to 56-1 under head coach Gary Patterson when allowing 17 points or less.
*The temperature of 19 degrees, with a wind chill of nine degrees, at kickoff made today the coldest game TCU has played in its five seasons in the Mountain West Conference. The previous low was 33 degrees last year at Utah (Nov. 6).
*TCU scored first in the game for the first time since week two against Texas State. Horned Frog opponents Clemson and SMU tallied first the last two games.
*TCU opened with a lead of at least 10-0 for the 13th time in its last 18 games.
*At minus-3 in turnover margin, TCU won for just the seventh time in 16 games since 2005 when on the negative side. The Frogs are 39-1 when ahead or even in turnover margin during that stretch.
*TCU won the time of possession battle for the fifth time in five games this season, holding the ball for 33:55. The Frogs led the nation in that category in 2008 with an average of 35:10.
Individual Notes
*Tekerrein Cuba, at weak safety, made his first start of the season. It was his second career start and the first since last year's season opener at New Mexico.
*Jason Teague made his second consecutive start at cornerback.
*Joseph Turner's 1-yard first-quarter scoring run was his team-high sixth rushing touchdown of the season and the 24th of his career, most among active TCU players. Turner has a touchdown in four of TCU's five games this season and five of the last six dating back to the 2008 campaign.
*Jimmy Young had six catches for 113 yards for his sixth career 100-yard effort and the high game by a Frog this season, bettering Bart Johnson's 70 yards on seven receptions against Texas State. In the first half alone, Young had a season high in both receptions (three) and receiving yards (74).
*Young now has 1,574 career receiving yards, moving past Quentily Harmon (1,557, 2003-06) into 10th place on TCU's all-time chart. Next on the list is Richard Woodley in ninth place with 1,620 (1990-93).
*An 8-yard second-quarter reception by Logan Brock on a third-and-5 at the Air Force 26 represented just the second catch of his career.
*Luke Shivers' 1-yard second-quarter carry to the Air Force 2-yard line marked the first time in three career rushing attempts that Shivers did not score a touchdown. His first two career carries were 3-yard scoring runs. Shivers has three touchdowns on just five career touches.
*Jeremy Kerley's 2-yard second-quarter touchdown run was his second rushing touchdown of the season on just four carries. He now has five rushing touchdowns in his career.
*Ross Evans' 38- and 27-yard second-half field goals made him 5-of-6 on the season and 21-of-26 in his career.
*Daryl Washington led TCU with 10 stops on defense, marking his second career double-digit tackle performance. He had 13 stops earlier this season at Clemson.
