SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Lizzy Karoly and Jackie Torda netted first half goals to lead TCU to a 2-1 victory over Texas-San Antonio Sunday afternoon at the UTSA Recreational Sports Complex."I thought today was okay. We created some very good chances, but weren't sharp with our final pass and finishes," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "We got outworked a little bit, but it was good for us to get the win."
Karoly looked to have put TCU on the board early in the match off a header from Jackie Torda, but watched as her shot sailed wide of the goal. Sophomore Chelsea Cody blasted a ball from outside the box a couple of minutes later, but had her shot saved by UTSA goalkeeper Nicoline Joergensen.
Midway through the first half, freshman Jordan Calhoun darted past the Roadrunners defense, but couldn't find the back of the net. Following a free kick by Cody in which several Horned Frogs had a chance to beat Joergensen, Karoly netted her eighth goal of the season, heading the ball between the posts off a deflection.
Torda increased the lead to 2-0 in the 28th minute, dropping a shot into the goal from about 25 yards out off an assist by Cody. Karoly almost found the back of the net again late in the half, but sailed her shot wide of the open net.
Right before the break, redshirt freshman Kaylie Garcia got behind the Roadrunners defense, but had her shot stopped by Joergensen. In the 41st minute, UTSA's Halee Hamm brought the Roadrunners within one just beating the outstretched arms of Kelsey Walters.
Torda tried to increase the lead following the break off a pass from Alex Mechalske, but had it deflected by a Roadrunner defender. Torda came back again midway through the period connecting on a ball from outside the box, but had her shot sail wide.
Calhoun got past the defense with 24 minutes remaining in the match, but watched as Joergensen came up with another big save. The freshman from Norman, Okla., almost found the back of the net a few minutes later, but just missed increasing the lead.
Finally, Michelle Nguyen had an open shot late in the match off a cross from Garcia, but watched as her shot was blocked by a Roadrunner defender.
Overall, TCU outshot the UTSA, 31-13, including 20-5 in the first half. On offense, TCU was led by Torda who fired seven shots and netted one goal, while Karoly posted five shots and one goal. The Horned Frogs have now outshot their opponent, 88-14, in their last two matches.
On defense, Walters held UTSA to only three shots on goal, stopping two balls, while Joergensen recorded 10 saves on the day.
The Horned Frogs moved to 8-1-1 on the year and have now won two-straight going into conference action. UTSA dropped to 3-7-0 on the year.
"I think we are playing with a lot of confidence right now, which is good, but we need to be more consistent in our play," said Abdalla.
TCU will next be in action against conference foe New Mexico next Sunday. Start time for the match is set for 1 p.m. in Fort Worth.
