
TCU announces March Athletes of the Month

FORT WORTH, Texas-TCU has announced its monthly award recipients for March 2008. Men's tennis player Kriegler Brink and Neidra Covington of the women's track and field team receive the honors for athletes of the month, while men's golfer Franklin Corpening and women's track and field member Macall Harkins have been selected as the scholar-athletes of the month.Brink posted a 10-1 singles mark at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions during the month, pushing his overall record to 19-1. Of Brink's 10 victories on the month, eight have come in straight sets. The 45th-ranked duo of Brink and Cosmin Cotet went 8-3 in doubles play, including a victory over the No. 28 duo from Oklahoma.
Covington, who was named all-conference for both the triple and long jump earlier in the month, posted an NCAA regional qualifying leap by soaring 20-00.25 to finish first overall in the women's long jump at the UTA/Bobby Lane Invitational this past weekend. The sophomore, who posted the 10th best leap in the NCAA on March 29, won her first event in her first outing of the spring after capturing All-America honors in both the long and triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this month.
At the conference level, Covington successfully defended her MWC indoor crown in the triple jump with an NCAA automatic leap of 44-00.00. With the mark, she broke her own school record in the event and posted the fifth-best mark in MWC women's championship history. She also won the women's long jump at the MWC Championships.
Corpening has posted two top-15 finishes on the month with his best coming March 23-25, as he placed fourth. Corpening came into the final day with a tie for the lead, before finishing with a 73, to end the tournament at 6 under. Of his six total rounds on the month, three were under par, including his best of 68, during the second round at the National Invitational Tournament.
Harkins went 8-2 in singles play on the month to lead TCU to a 9-2 mark overall for March. Of her eight wins, six came in straight sets. The team of Harkins and Anna Sydorska, who is ranked 12th nationally, posted an 8-2 record on the month.
